The inserts are cut a lot smaller then stock and from what I've read on their website, it's a deeper insert as well. What type of plugs go in these things? Part # etc.
Also, while I have the engine out. I've always had a problem with oil puking out the pulley. Even though it has a complete breather kit on there, it still likes to spray oil all over the deck lid of my bus. It's starting to look like a hippie bus with all this oil. Plus the engine is getting all grimy. What do I need to check to fix this and or will installing a sand seal help or hurt the problem? Thanks in advance for your advise.

I have also have CB 044 heads. They require NGK spark plugs ,3/4 in reach, 12 mm. They are actually mototcycle plugs. CB carries them and they are much cheaper than trying to buy them locally. I'm running part# DP8EA-9. Check out this site http://www.cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=1278. Good Luck.
Also, you may also want to do a search on this forum. There is a lot of info about them that may help you out.

What is the configuration of your breather? Is the unit sealed, or is it vented? Crankcase pressure has to have some place to go and the path of least resistance in many cases is behind the crank pulley or out of the dip stick hole. Did this just start???or has it been doing this all the time? Do a search on this problem too. I have and there is a wealth of info out there, even photos of different configurations. I don't post much, but I read this forum almost daily and I've obtained solutions to almost every problem that I've encountered. Good luck again.

Thanks for the info on the plugs. My local VW shop should carry them and they are usually very reasonably priced on all their products.
As far as my oil leaking issue, it's been doing it since I built the engine. The breather system has a hose coming from each valve cover to the breather. A hose coming from the oil filler to the breather and a hose going from the breather to one of the carbs (dual carbs). I opened the breather up and checked the foam and there is oil residue on it but it's not soaked with oil. |

You are either reving your motor too high or are having some serious blow by.
That is unless the "hosing" for your breather is not laid out correctly. Do a search on the subject in this forum. I prolly have a picture of my layout somewhere. What you want is to have the hoses set up in a way that will NOT trap oil in them (ref. look at the drain pipe under your sink. That "S" is a trap) so when the engine is turned off any oil in the hoses will drain right back into the case. If it "puddles" up in the pipe it will not "breathe".
The way I have it set up, it doesn't even have a breather box. It comes up from the breather port where you pour the oil in. From there it "T's" into the top of both carbs. No box mess, sealed system, creates a vacuum. :P |

| I don't think it's getting trapped. There are no kinks in the system. I like your idea of the T then going to the carbs. And the highest rpm's that I drive are like 3700-3800, somtimes 4000 on the freeway if I'm not paying attention. That's in a bus with stock redux boxes and tranny on stock sized tires. |

| I think I found the source of my oil leak(s). After doing some investigating and taking the pulley off, I discovered that there is an oil trail coming off the top of the case. When I brought the shop light over for a better peek, the evidence showed even better that the source of the leak is the fuel pump. All of the oil seemed to originate from there and then flowed down making it look like it was coming from the pulley. I took the pump off and the seals were covered in oil. It's hard to believe but it was leaking enough to leave a spray when driving all over the deck lid. I'm sure there are a few other places that are leaking too but this seems to be the main culprit. |

OK, so what happened when you put everything back together. Did the leak go away??? Just curious. :?:

| The engine is not back together yet. Right now it's just sitting in my kitchen where I do most of my work. Probably won't be ready for at least another week. There are some other things I need to address like sanding the oil pump cover to make it perfectly flat. I believe there is a small oil leak there too. Then I need to buy some good oil line to run to my external filter. My current set up also leaks a little. I'm thinking of going to an idustrial supply shop and getting some hydrolic line made for it. That should hold up for a while. I used to use standard hose with clamps and fittings until the "IN" fell off the filter one day and I almost lost the engine. |

The process of putting the engine back together is under way. Today I sanded down the cover plate to the oil pump and installed a new gasket. Reinstalled the fuel pump and put probably more than enough sealant there. That's where it was leaking from in the first place. New dizzy seal, new pushrod tube seals etc. I don't mind a little oil leaking. It wouldn't be a VW without it but the spray on the back of the deck lid was really annoying.
I can't wait to try out these 044's! |
