With the info you folks posted - I managed to set up the timing on my type 4 motor as follows:
29/30 deg BTDC at 3500 rpm (leaving me at about 6 BTDC at idle), and the difference was DRAMATIC!!!! Whooooeeeeiii! This is fun!
You guys are making the ownership of this thing a BLAST! Thank you!
In reference to tachometer info - Here's how I spent an hour or two Saturday:
Installing a 1970's BMW tach into my bus. I used a 1973 BMW 2002 factory tachometer (any 1968-1974 would also fit) , and used the blanking facia original to my bus as a clamping holder for the new tach. I dremeled a hole in it to allow the wires to attach to the tach, and by using the BMW black trim rings and bezel - got it to fit snugly / perfectly using longer (2") fine self tapping screws. I's got a black face with white numbers - but it's VDO, and looks like it was MADE for the hole in the gauge cluster!
next project - adding some extra bulbs to illuminate all the gauges better.
wires to tach:
12v power supply (battery or ignition switched, etc - I chose red)
wire from the coil - same terminal as condenser wire (-) (I used green)
ground (brown)
I wish I had photos to show - but can explain in better detail to anyone interested.
Ciao!

That BMW tach is a good idea. I took the long way home. . . used a Jaguar/Lucas movement and had the speedometer numerals silk-screened onto the face plate, all-in-all a big mess with a plastic coffee lid light diffuser. :D
