I own a '73 KG I bought from this guy about a year ago. It will be my daily driver when I get it going. Does anyone know what that relay switch
is called that sits between the the regulator and the coil? I was flipping thru a web page and thought I spotted it. Forgot the name of web page, but page said it was a starter relay. Was this standard equipment on this Ghia or was this added afterwards? Can I run my ghia without it? I will send photos of part and part number to anyone who is willing to help.
None of the VW experts in my area know what I am talking about.

Could conceivably be a "hard-start" relay that a p.o. installed, but a pic and part number would help.

I'm with Jason on the hard start relay. Or maybe someone put the rear window defogger relay there??

If it looks factory... small silver unit with a VW part # then I think it is the rear window defroster relay...

I cannot see any reason someone would put a hard start relay in that location... although with some of the things I've seen people do to these cars... it wouldn't surprise me :roll:

Starting to think it is a rear window defrost relay. Sorry no photo because my camara "blows"! Part # is 311 906 061C. It is approximately
3/4" x 3/4" x 3/4", silver, has a mounting tab on the back and has (5) electrical prongs on the bottom. I found it bolted to the fan shroud right behind the coil.

Yes thats the rear window defogger relay. I moved mine to the spot where the altitude adjuster once was. This keeps it under the lip of the hood edge so it can stay dry and out of the way.
