Where does the pre-heat hose on a 67 Ghia air cleaner go to? This is the air cleaner on the right-hand side with the single 1 1/2" hose that goes down through the tin on the right. None of the parts catalogs show a "stove pipe" for anything older than a 68. The beetle forum talks about connections off the heat exchangers...same thing for a Ghia, or was the stove pipe back-fit into 67s?

Yes, there is a connection flange for that hose towards the top of the right heat exchanger and just in front of the bellhousing tin. Really just a
short length of pipe welded into the heat exchanger jacket at that point
and the flex hose is connected with a worm clamp.
Just completed a resto on a '66 KG cabrio and that's where it is
properly connected on that model.

So it runs through the hole in the back tin, then all the way forward to the upper end of the heat exchanger (by the lever)? Any brackets, or does it just hang free? Seems like the wind would tear it off...

Now I know the stovepipe won't work, either. I got one in the mail last night, and it's twice as big around as the air cleaner hose. Another candidate for the spare (useless) parts bin.

On the '66 KG 'vert, the hose only extends maybe 3" forward after it exits the bellhousing tin on the upper right side.
Secured with a hose clamp at the upper right heat exchanger fitting mentioned previously, that hose ain't coming off easily. In fact, that area is pretty cramped with only limited room to make the connection and secure with the clamp. #-o

Maybe I'm just slow on the uptake here...the hose goes from the air cleaner to the bell housing tin? My owner's manual shows it going straight down from the air cleaner snout through a grommet in the right corner of the rear breastplate...just behind where the intake manifold risers go up to the carb.

As far as "cramped" goes, since my entire car is in pieces occupying all three bays in the garage, I don't have many access issues

no no no,
It goes from the aircleaner. Through the rear breastplate piece of tin on the right hand side (beside the hose connecting the fan housing to the heaterbox) and connects to a port on the heaterbox. The right side (passenger side) heaterbox should have two ports, one for the heater hose and one for this preheat hose. The left hand side has one port for the heater hose. The issue of being cramped has to do with the space between the top of the heaterbox and the tin.

(Light comes on)

See, I said I was slow on the uptake. Thanks, folks. Now, if I could just figure out where I left my @#$%^&& air cleaner...

I'm glad you got it all figured. Do you have all of the OG stuff to hook that warm air system up?

GhiaNut Wed Mar 10, 2004 1:55 pm

I think so. I have to go home and check the replacement heat exchangers for the stubby little pipe. I have the hose, one clip, the grommet for the breast plate, the breast plate (one left and one right small hole, but I can pug the one on the left) and, of course, the air cleaner. Anything else?

Theres a cable that opens the flap on the warm air inlet on the airfilter. I have never seen one, or seen one hooked up. I guess this flap is open in the cold position, then the cable moves and the flap closes when the engine gets warm. I have heard it hooks onto the flaps on the fanshroud. But I don't know if this is correct or not?

GhiaNut Thu Mar 11, 2004 9:00 am

The cable is on later years, but not on a 67. There's a flap, but it stays shut (drawing warm air) by gravity at idle. When you rev up, it opens, drawing cool(er) air from inside the engine compartment. The flap has a little round "tab" on the hinge pin that you can clip under part of the air cleaner snout during the summer, allowing the engine to draw air from the engine compartment all the time. Low-tech, but hey., at least I don't have to try and find one of those cables. You're right..they hook to the flaps in the fan housing.

By the way, the new heat exchangers don't have the pre-heat connection. Luckily, I found an old one in the pile-o-parts that does. So, one shiny new hx, one beater with fresh paint. Could be worse.

you could cut and paste with the old and new heat exchangers
