check out this engine number. It has a crank start pulley nut on the engine as well. Is it a bus engine? If so, what year?

can you get a better shot of the stamps below the number?

looks like it says AUSTAUSCH perhaps?

What would that indicate though?

an exchange engine would not necessarily have its original number.

look at the motor more closely, do you know what it came out of?

does it have an exhaust on it? bus or beetle?
what kind of distributor does it have? vacuum or centrifugal? (as in no vacuum canister. Beetles are always vacuum advance.

my feeling is you won't be able to tell from the number

It has a crank start nut. Custom exhaust though. It's in a bug right now

mandraks Thu May 12, 2016 12:12 pm

crank start nut could be bus or bug

I doubt it matters either way since it appears to be an exchange engine

I think you're right.....Factory rebuild

Maybe it's a replacement case and they stamped the vin # from the bus?

I think a lot of cases have batch codes or dates on the area behind the flywheel.
