I was wondering if the Industrial Shields made by Awesome Powder Coating will fit a type 3.

I know that type 1 and type 3 have different tin but was wondering if the sled tin has similar dimensions and bolt locations.
I got rid of my heater boxes and like the idea of using the shields to keep the thermostat operating normally. |

I think those should fit just fine. They bolt to the case, which shares mounting screw locations with a t-1 engine. |

Actually they bolt to the sled tin. Same place the heater boxes bolt on.
I sent a note to the company and they were unsure. They asked for the dimensions of the mounting tabs on my heater boxes. Which I provided. FYI both sides are 5.5 inches CTC on the mounting tabs.
Anyone out there have type 1 and 3 sled tins? That can compare them dimensionally? |

Glenn, I saw your post else where. These are VW originals, correct?
Is that on a type 3 or 1? |

It's my Type 1 and they are real Type 122 tins. |

Update: I purchased these and they do fit Type 3. Not sure if they will make a big difference. I got them primarily for the idea that they might help the Thermostat operate normally. Fit is OK. Should serve the purpose. |

How did you get them to fit? I’ve got quite a gap between the sled and the aftermarket industrial tins. Wasn’t sure if I should swap for a Type 1 sled? |

What are they used for in that location. Advantage or disadvantage. |

Trying to seal air passing sled on it’s way out through the rear while using J tubes. |

IMO- The main benefit is that they act as a heat shield for J tubes to keep the exhaust heat out/away from the engine and extend the 'tunnel' for the cooling air coming around to the bottom of the engine.
I have the OG 122 heat shields as well as the Awesome Powdercoat version - they're similar but the original part fits better and covers more of the gap on a Type 3. |

Might you be able to show a side by side photo? |

Unfortunately, not without a lot of effort - one set is on my engine, the other set is buried in a tote in my garage somewhere behind construction materials (I'm in the middle of a rather extensive remodel right now).
The original industrial tins are fairly hard to find - the AP tins are a very close match and will do what you'd buy them for so you can't go wrong. |

I can see the use of those tins when using J Tubes type 1 or type 3. |

I run these on both my '69 bus and '67 squareback.
Not originals, but aftermarket from butty's bits in the UK.
