I have a project vw woods rail. It has a problem with the shifter having a lot of slop side to side when in gear. Can get into all gears but i have trouble finding them to shift because it feels like there is no slots/guides like in my car. This is my first vw, so I'm not sure what the shifter should feel like.

Replace your shifter bushing:

The description "woods rail" by definition leaves lots of ways shifter can be used or abused... Would help with some pictures of what actual shifter mount is like and what type of shift mechanism you are using... If after market stuff, solutions can be wide variations on what VW used...

It's a stock shifter. Has a steel box welded in and shift shaft installed. New bushing. I found a Loose fitting at the rear of the shift rod which I plan to tighten and see what happens.

Played around with the coupler into the trans and got it shifting perfect. I didn't see it before because I just took out the seats and was able to see it now. I still have an issue with the car sort of bouncing up and down when driving it and I'm not sure what's causing it.

Pictures help us help you. Without them, the ramblings of one who is new to this stuff can have very vague meaning to us who might otherwise be able to help you fix your problems.
