View original topic: a question about front beams...

I have a 63' panel and a '66 11 window....and I have one 4 inch narrowed beam... is a '63 or earlier beam any different than a '64-'67 beam? Can they easily be swaped?
Thanks, Mikel

I think......
there is a chance that the beams are a little different. I believe that in 63 there was an optional beam that you got if you opted for the bigger engine. I think the spindles are different. You should be able to switch the beams if you do it completely (drum to drum) with no problem though.

remember, I think.......

I heard that any beam up to like 1971 or so will swap if you do entire front from drum to drum too. Good luck, let as know if it works.

yes they are different and yes they can be swapped as a unit.

The biggest difference in the split beams is the steering dampener. On the earlier one the dampener attaches to the frame of the bus. The later on it attaches to the beam. They will swap though.

I was told one time that '63 actually used 3 different spindles that year. I know that wolfgang used to do those only when you sent yours in because of that. the rear also used a special drum for the 1500cc motor. its small spline but the same diameter as a '64-'67 drum.
