so i bought a 71 square...straight body decent interior...i was told that the last time it ran it smoked....it had set for 2 years having been bought on a lien sale...towed it home added fuel and a battery...sure enough smoked like a hippie....sounds good but smokes... so later that day i dropped the engine...yea i know i should have done a compression test but left my tester at work...pulled the heads no cracks ok cylinders show signs of cross hatching and blow by...pulled cylinders...now this is where i'm at... the most blow-by is appearent on of course #3...however the case shows signs of discoloration where the cylinder seats in the case...it doesn't look like sevre carmeliztion from overheating i think that the last driver replaced heads and didn't rebuild with any kind of forsight...is this discoloring a major thing???does the case new to be taken to the machine shop????all the studs are good bearings appear good...i haven't split the case...
any thoughts and help
i believe ask, think and build. when i question ask...better to ask a question than make a stupid mistake... |

hey now!,I resemble that remark
so the valve guides look good and seated all the way, sounds like the heads are in pretty good shape otherwise.did you by chance check to see if the heads were properly torqued and not loose, crank and cam seal good?
these are basic questions I ask at work so I apologize, but if there are no signs of anything wrong externally and with just the heads pulled off then you might want to go ahead and split the case since you've gone this far already and check all your bearings and the crank surface, just all the obvious stuff. |
