Hi Again!
I am considering a 2334 for street use. I looked up the parts and the total came to just over 10k...
I can buy a turn key engine for less, but I know they take short cuts, or use cheaper parts to drive down the price.
I know a guy that can do a damn good job building me an engine, but whats a better deal? Getting a turn key or having some one build it?

jfats808 Tue Aug 16, 2016 10:33 am

Have someone build you one.

I could build you a 2276 with cb wedgeports, powder coated tins, and 45 dell's for around 7k. Dpr crank, all good stuff.

mark tucker Tue Aug 16, 2016 10:41 am

buy. not worth you spending a pile of $$$ to take to a swap meat afterwords. cb, scat etc not bubba behind his uncles fillen station&salon

I'd like to see the 10k parts list..... Not saying you can't get that wrapped up into an engine. For an example, CB's BIG Engine Builders Longblock is around $5200, bur where are you spending the other $4800?

This is for everything from the case out. It also includes a brake upgrade front and rear as well as drop spindles. I just guessed on the cam, seems like a lot of people here like to use f8 or fk8.

This is my price list quote from CB. Any changes or modifications are welcome for this hot DD motor. Not planning on racing it, but WTF you never know. Also includes new rims and tires. There are prolly about 2k worth of things here that are not engine related, but you get the idea

porkchop-rob Tue Aug 16, 2016 12:59 pm

I would go with the MagnaSpark or MagnaSpark II Distributor if it were me.

Also, seems like a few items were redundant, but I was reading fast, so maybe not.

If your not confident....let CB Build it. I wouldn't trust a NON-VW guy to build one.

If you want to learn, tinker, and be proud of your accomplishment...then jump in and build it yourself.

I chose the latter. I want to learn and grow and I'm willing to risk the possible "school of hard knocks" moments.

Tons of companies can hook you up with a "long block" parts list (and also suggest carburation and exhaust) to meet your goals. Everything else is preference and looks IMO.

Don't forget youll need a transmission to keep up.

74 Thing Tue Aug 16, 2016 1:17 pm

From that parts list that is going to be a mismatch of parts with huge heads, small carbs and a small camshaft.

Call someone like Pat Downs at CB Performance and Steve Tims, maybe DRD, and Jfats said above he may be of assistance and get a quote directly and be honest with them what you want for performance and rpm range and how you plan to drive the vehicle. Then go with the person you feel most comfortable with. Tell them you want it broken in and maybe jetted and dyno'd too if that is what you want (although dyno numbers differ greatly, but that is another story in itself).

jpaull Tue Aug 16, 2016 1:26 pm

You have $2836 not related to the engine, and $356 of it is that chrome/polished high torque super dooper starter lol.

your gonna run 46X37 ultra wedgeports with 40idf's?

So that $10,000 engine you mentioned is actually $6,500 + shipping. Also, someone elses "turnkey" might not include Flanged heater boxes, premium new CB white rhino supercase, and 46X37 ultra wedgeports with snakeskin valve upgrade hehe.

Just saying, your list of parts might include better stuff then what someone elses turnkey consists of for that "lower" cost that they offer.

Soooo see how much the engine builder will build your engine with your exact parts list, and then see what the difference is, and what you will save by doing it yourself.

40x35.5 Panchito heads with 44IDFs should be capable of 160HP of streetable power, without super heavy springs and such. Not sure how much power you need. But, you'll need a good transaxle at the least, with super high power I'd want to spend some money on a cage, brakes and good tires.

vwracerdave Tue Aug 16, 2016 2:19 pm

You have a bad mismatch of everything and way too big of heads for a street car with heater boxes.

The cheapest option is to buy a complete long block then finish the top end with all the sheet metal and accessories yourself.

spencerfvee Tue Aug 16, 2016 4:17 pm

listen to racer dave .when you build that big of a motor with all that power . you have to get it to the ground .that means more money for a trans .that will hold all that power .the motor will put out. a good built trans can cost from $3,000. to $5,000 then you have to set the car up more .money. . been there done it . best of luck to you. go for it if you have the money . spencerfvee ps you are not going to use a flanged crank or a CB wedge matted crank . ? quote="vwracerdave"]You have a bad mismatch of everything and way too big of heads for a street car with heater boxes.

You also need to add $300-$500 in special tools to build a big stroker engine.

Bob Brugge Wed Aug 17, 2016 6:22 am

Thanks all. I did just mostly guess at what parts I would need. Trying to get a basic idea of what it would cost. Yes there are some expensive choices, like the super hi torque starter, but the one I wanted was not in stock so I couldn't get a quote together with out putting something down.

The heads are too big?? I was hoping for something more streetable than race only heads. Or are the carbs and cam too small for those heads? The guy who is going to build this beast for me can give me advice on what I need too. He is the ONLY air cooled mechanic in town. He has a Porsche motor on his bench right now that he has built. It uses 40's and he thinks it has about 170 hp. That's where I came up with that number.
The parts list also includes a HD tranny I believe. But like everything else I haven't a clue on what R&P to use.

Bottom line is I am not ready to plunk down a boat load of cash today, I just wondered if it would be more cost effective to build or buy a motor. Longevity plays a huge roll in cost effectiveness in my world.

jason Wed Aug 17, 2016 6:46 am

It adds up quick. Whenever I get to be on call at work, my play money. I buy or save for a part. I did the math the other day and I'm around $12000 in parts. Thats as much as I paid for my last new car. This is for everything though. I need a few more things too. Good parts are expensive. I have a Berg crank and Carillo rods. A huge expense there which could be a DPR unit, save lots of money there. You should be around $7000 for a really good motor. This is all new parts. Some used parts can also bring the price down. No way I could ever have spent that much money on a motor at once. This has been over the course of years.

vwracerdave Wed Aug 17, 2016 3:03 pm

Right now I have an $8,000 pile of all new parts to build a 200 HP 2332cc engine for my drag race Dunebuggy.

Holy crap. But wait you said race... Not trying to build a race engine, There is just no way I could afford to build a safe vehicle for the track AND maintain it, AND afford the $500.00 for the weekend, but man if I ever win the lottery...

I am guessing you are only 8k for parts 'cuz you know what you are doing. When I get a pile o' money I will be more interested in moving forward with this plan. I am expecting a settlement in the next 6 to 12 months So I just might have 7k or 8k or 10k to throw into a motor at some point in time.

modok Wed Aug 17, 2016 5:11 pm

40idf-70 webers are only good for about 130 hp, you could get more out of them if there was some rule you had to use them, but there isn't, and thank god, out of all the commonly used italian carbs they are the worst. Worst of the best? still better than kadrons, something like that.

The panchitos heads are awesome, should support 160hp, and Pat ways a lot more, but that's my WAG looking at them, so they are a good match for 44idfs

Same with the tires man. 165r-15 sizes is only LOW quality stuff, 175-65 or yokohamas or 186-65 goodyear assurance tires are WAY better, hell cooper tires are better than any of those mexican taxi tires

If you want to do it yourself than we'll try to help, although certainly most of us are beyond help already :P And not qualified to help you decide. Having an exert put together a kit for you probably is a good idea but who does that??

Pruneman99 Wed Aug 17, 2016 6:50 pm

Anyone else worried about a $13 buck gland nut holding a $7K dollar engine together?
