Hi guys

Recently bought a dune buggy with a 1964 chassis and transaxle.

I have no motor and want a little more power than the 1300 6v that was there...what would you guys recommend for the most economical step up since I have the 180mm trans.

What do I have to do to my 180mm trans to fit say a 1600 or a 92 legacy suby motor using a conversion plate?

Not much vw air cooled motors in my area so I am stuck with buying a motor online

Can't answer on the Subaru question, but can say the 6volt flywheel you have for a 1300 will fit a 1600cc motor. Run a 6 volt starter and it will work like that for years. I think by the time you run plumbing for cooling a Subaru, buy all the adapters, etc. that avenue won't be as economical as buying a 1600 longblock.

You just need to grind out the bell housing to clear a 12 volt flywheel. And use the correct adapter starter bushing for a 12 volt starter.

one of the later bus 6 volt flywheels has the large clutch if you score that flywheel you can have the best of both, the larger clutch for the more powerful motor with no bell house grinding and retain the 6 volt starter. the other 6 volt flywheels have the smaller clutch of the smaller motors. of course with a light buggy maybe the smaller clutch is ok, unless you put on some big off road tires, then clutch slippage might be an issue so the bigger clutch is needed, so grind away the bell house and run the 12 volt starter.

choices to make!

a nice 1600 dp motor will give you a lot more umph for sure.

good luck and welcome to vws!!!!
