View original topic: Type 3 beams or arms?

I have no experience with type 3 beams, but when I see pix of them, it looks like the arms are longer than type 1 beams. Are they longer, thus giving more travel if long shocks are used? If so, would they fit in a type 1 beam?

Type III uses splined torsions in front and rear.

Would the Type 3 springs and arms fit in type 1 beam? Are the arms longer than type 1?

Yes, the arms are longer. No, they are not compatible with type 1. Someone baja'd a squareback & there was a nice write up on it in the forums. I'm sure you could make a beam that accepted them but then you'd have to extend the pan head to compensate for the longer arms & at that point, why not go King/link front end?

That buildup of a Baja Type 3 and the work on the T3 beam was by 57Baja. The car was for his son. He owns KaddyShack and would probably answer any questions if you called.

The T3 front torsions are way longer than Bug torsions in that they do not anchor in the center like in a Bug. They criss-cross and anchor on the far side. So instead of having 2 torsion leaf stacks, one in each tube, each works for both sides; The T3 has 2 round torsion bars, both in the lower tube, one that works for the left arm and one that works for the right arm. Different in many ways and not too easy to swap parts.

The other thing is that the top bar connecting the top trailing arms in the T3 beam acts as a sway bar. This can be replaced with a threaded rod and pinch clamps like those used for coil over beam conversions.
