Well the car is in the shop getting new interior rear quarter panels. I received a call from the shop that is installing them and they say that I need a 2 piece panel. The kit I purchased came with a one piece replacement. My rear armrests are full length from front to back. Has anyone had a similar experience with a 66 fastback or does anyone know why I am running into this problem? I have talked to TMI direct and they think I'm a nut case. Thanks for any help in this matter.

| The panel itself is 1 piece. They might be talking about the piece underneath the armrest, which is a piece of fiberboard or ??? covered with smooth vinyl. If the shop can't do it, save the money and do it yourself. Good luck |

Nope,
It's a 2-piece design. I have the same type in my Fasty.
Euro TL option type.

TMI sold you a one-size-fits-all kit. I just checked their website and it says 66-72, 66 had completely different interior than 67-72. Your car has (or should have) a hard plastic armrest on the doors and on the rear section, for the rear passenger. Most likely, your shop used the front door panels by getting rid of the Z armrest (a shame) and mounting them flat to the door, but the rear isn't flat, so they can't just clip in the panel as it came. They might be able to cut the panel in half, and do some custom work to make it look nice.
Here's a pic from the gallery of the two piece armrests out of a 66 squareback, you can see how it's raised outwards for the passenger armrest, right above the chrome strip. Hope this makes sense.

A friend who is fixing up a '67 fasty explained it to me:
The 1-piece setup is a base-model American setup; the 2-piece is a Euro piece. As I understand it, the 1-piece is also easier to manufacture. Not better, just easier.
The uneven squareback setup is just that- squareback only. The fasty and notch have different side panels because they have a different rear seat from the square. The fasty rear seat was never meant to fold like a square's; there's no utility value to the act because of crossmembers behind the seat.
Ask Bobnotch. He understands. :D |

Well I guess I have a pair of unused rear quarters in grey (1 piece) avail. if anyone needs them. I will just have the old ones recovered as the panels are still in excellent condition. E-mail me if you have a need for them. I have talked again to TMI so they may pass on to the distributors that there is a difference and to note it on all the webstores, etc. I can't really say that I was impressed with TMI's attitude and help as I wasn't angry about the whole deal. I just wanted to prevent someone else from making the same mistake. Many props to Martin at the DDB and Gary at Jbugs though as they were helpful and at least showed some interest in the matter. Thanks everyone for your help. As always the Samba rules!!!!
