I need some advice/opinions on Baja kits:
1) Who makes the best quality kits?
2) What are the relative advantages/disadvantages between the different style kits?
3) What style kit do you preferr and why?
I would like to make a 'mild' off-road Baja out of a '69 Bug. I still would want it street legal/driveable but with some off-road capability. Any advice you can offer would be appreciated....
Thanks |

I like mark V. They are decent quality kits. I love my bug-eye set up. It keeps the weight of the headlights in the nose and off the fenders. Also It makes the light more stable at night, and it doesnt bouce around in the wind. look at my pic ive got the wide-eye fenders with the bug-eye nose. I dont really car for the wide-eye fenders. Im looking for a set of Bug-eye ones to replace them.

| What ever you do if your buying used make sure the bolt holes where the hood mounts up to the spring plates are ok. My brother just bought a kit off ebay for 100 bucks and although it looks good we're having to customize the hood situation because the nuts pulled free from the fiberglass. |

| my fix to the rather weak hinge mounts was to "suicide" the hood of my bugeye using a piano hinge across the front. 8) |

| thats a good Idea but we have a 7 pice wide eye and the nose pice is quite curvatious (like a beautiful woman but, not quite) and I think we would have some issues mounting flat hinges to such a rounded nose pice. |

Thanks for the responses....
Does anybody make a steel Baja kit or are they all fiberglass?
How much do have to cut away between the various kits, front and rear? Which kit requires the most stock metal removed and which requires the least?
Thanks |

I haven't seen a metal kit before. There are some rear metal fenders available but they mount above the original holes on the quarters and are more for paddle tire clearence.
As far as cutting, all the basic kits are about the same. If you went with a 1 piece front end you'll be cutting more off, same witha 1 piece rear. |

| you can make rear metal fenders by mounting the front ones on the rear backwards and then cutting the lower half off. Apparently some of the holes line up and if you fill in the blinker mount holes i dont think it would look too bad as long as you didnt do a hack job on the cutting. I found that information somewhere and he had pictures and everything how to do it. I thought about it but my baja will be made into more show than off road abilities so im gonna go with the 7 pc fiberglass. If you just need the clearance for offroading i would definitly do that. |
