View original topic: Samba Feature Cars section

We are putting together a new section for TheSamba.com featuring interesting aircooled VWs from shows everywhere in the world. We aren't necessarily talking about magazine quality cars. Stock or custom, daily drivers, show entries, original paint, unrestored or partially restored, it doesn't matter.

What we need from you: If you have a digital camera and are planning on attending a VW Show, just be on the lookout for anything cool or interesting. If you find something, please locate the car's owner and ask them if you can take some pictures and get some information for a possible feature on TheSamba.com.

Here are some general guidelines:
1. Lots of high resolution digital pictures so we can select the best. Suggestions for pictures: Good shots of entire car from left & right. Front, rear, left front quarter, right front quarter, left rear quarter, right rear quarter, shots from above and below line of sight are interesting. We'd also like an engine shot, under hood shots, shots from both sides of the interior, including backseat area, dash, and door panels. Also, any interesting features or accessories. Try not to have distractions in the background, keep shots in focus, and detailed.
2. Approval of owner - you'll need this anyway to get interior shots of the car.
3. Basic information about the car for a short article. You can write it up or submit the raw info, whichever you prefer. We may edit them anyway.

Information we'd like for the coverage:
-Owner name/location
-Nice description of car
-Any points of interest
-Anything that makes this car special?
-History (if possible)
-Club affiliations
-Suppliers/Shops who worked to bring the car together
-Anyone the owner would like to mention or thank

If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, you can send me a PM or email me at jen@thesamba.com.
Anyone who contributes a feature car (from a VW show they attend) that we use on the site will receive a free Samba T-Shirt.

If we could get at least 1 feature car from all the major shows, we should have enough cool coverage to get us through the off-season. Don't worry if there are multiple Samba operatives working at the same shows, everyone has different interests, so the more variety, the better.

Thanks in advance for the help!

In addition to interesting cars from different shows, the new Samba Feature Cars section is open to your suggestions.

If you know of (or own) a VW that would make a nice addition, please contact me at jen@thesamba.com.

The quickest way to submit a car is to email a few (2 or 3) pictures, the basic description, and what makes the car worth featuring. You must be able to submit quality digital pictures if your submission is accepted. At that point we will get lots more information and pictures from you. :D

Thank You

Semi-legal disclaimer: there is a multi-person screening process and not all cars submitted can be featured. No crying, begging, or bribery allowed

...actually, bribery attempts are appreciated. Small, used bills preferred, in a brown paper bag. It won't work, but feel free to try. :)

So where should I send my pictures and "Donation" to

Thanks to everyone who has expressed interest in either getting pictures of VWs at shows worldwide, or submitting their own VW for the new Featured Cars section.

Let me just clarify that we are not really looking for cars previously featured in magazines (although they aren't automatically excluded). We are trying to spotlight cars that go largely unseen by Samba visitors. Some people that I have requested to include their VW in this section have expressed surprise, but it's these non-show cars that we really want to feature.

Thanks again

Jen

So, um, Jen, would the Snorkelstang qualify as a "featured" car? :)

Jennepher Fri Apr 02, 2004 2:25 pm

No.

does anybody know when the feature car section will be on the samba?

Cool, very good idea.
I'll be awake here in Holland, we have plenty of shows and very HQ bugs on them.

It might be interesting to do feature cars based on specific years. Take for example 1959. You could do type 1 through type 4 and use several cars in each type. It would be a great resource for a person doing a restoration. Here they could find pictures from various cars in each type for a particular year. :? Each month would be devoted to a particular year and everyone could send pictures of that years car, depending on type.

The new section is up under the Community Tab. Link: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/featurecars/

We decided to start by featuring 4 VWs and will add more as frequently as possible.

Suggestions, submissions, questions? email or PM me. :D

'53 Oval, great suggestion - once we start getting a lot of submissions, we'll probably do a re-organization. I like the idea of grouping them so that comparision and reference is possible. Thanks for the idea.

what do you consider high res? ive only got a 3.1 megapixel camera. is that a decent enough res?

Jennepher Mon May 17, 2004 10:44 am

That's fine.

BTW, we are collecting submissions for the next batch of Feature Cars. So submit yours or be on the lookout at one of the upcoming shows. We are trying to add new cars at least once a month, but we'll add more as we get them....

I shot the '60 Kombi feature pix with my cheapo (under $100) HP digital cam with only 1megpixel set at MEDIUM res. They look pretty good though, IMHO and would print decent at 4x6 size.
