View original topic: Who is the type 3 motor guru?

I have a COMPLETE engine, still in the crate for a type three. It has me a little confused though.
The serial numbers say that it is a 1966 1.6 litre, but it is fuel injected, and is 6 volt.
It is 100% complete, injection, distrubuter, flywheel& clutch, heater boxes, tin, and ALL brand new!!
I would like to get more information about it's origin and intended use though.
Anybody out there ever seen a 66 fuel injected type 3? I didn't think that the injection was even offered till 68.

Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

facory rebuilt? but that wouldn't explain why it had a 6v flywheel on it still :-k

To the best of my knowledge, no Fuel injected Type 3 engine would be 6 volt.

Are you sure?

< "Are you sure?>
It has the 6 volt Bosch coil.
I will open the crate again tonight and confirm that the generater and flywheel are 6 volt, but I believe that they are.
I am thinking that it was intended for a European model.
It is still in the original crate, with VW logo's and freight information stenceled in german.

thta's what I was thinking.I was thinking also that it was maybe built at the factory for a replacement under warranty for a customer or perhaps built to have in stock in a dealer's parts dept. and they just used an early case that was left over from a production run or something but it still doesn't explain the 6v coil, gen. and flywheel.

1966 Ended the 6 Volt Era... Right ? The fuel injection was post 67

OK. I'm feeling pretty stupid about now.
The motor in question IS a 66, is 6 volt, and it IS totally complete, but........it has dual solex carbs. LOL
When we pried the lid off of the crate late last night, the guy that I was with kinda climbed-in to read-off the serial nunbers for me. He told me that he was really surprised to see the fuel injection.
I was a little disappointed when I opened it tonight to really check it out.

Oh well, it still seems cool to find a complete turnkey. I still don't know if it is a factory rebuild, or NOS.
I would imagine that even though all the accessories are new, the motor itself is probably a rebuild. I can not imagine that this thing sat in a crate for 38 years!

My world is back in order now that I know there are no 6v fuel injected engines out there.

Cool engine though. It could be an NOS engine or it could be a factory rebuild.

Any photos?
