If you can't read the ruler, here are the dimensions. The drop center starts 1½" from the outer rim, and about 1-1¼" from the inner rim. Since the drop center is much deeper at the outer rim, it may be that it's easier to mount the tire from the shiny side.

6":

On the 6, the drop center is a full 2" away from the outer rim, and again, it starts about 1-1¼" from the inner rim.

I've personally wrestled with tires trying to mount them on deep 6s. While trying to mount from the outer rim, I had to stop at the point of doing damage to the tire's bead. By mounting from the backside I was just barely able to get it on the wheel.
Use lots of bead butter!

i am trying order a set of new lug nuts for my newly purchased original Fuchs.

looking at the Pelikan site now, which is the best to go for?

steel or aluminium? it says on the site that even the original aluminums are prone to stripping.

Steel is your best bet to avoid stripping.

Only if you allow morons with impact guns to work on your car.

I've been using the same set of used mostly genuine Porsche aluminum lug nuts on my wheels for nearly 20 years. Never stripped a single one. 94 ftlbs.

If they're ok to use on a car with hundreds of more hp, and weighing thousands more, they'll be fine on any VW.

says here to mount tires onto the Deep6 from the back, does this apply to the European tyre machines too?

also i read from another forum that it is advisable to run tubes with early fuchs due to the missing safety beading, is that true? how many running without tubes?

The safety bead humps have nothing to do with tubes or tubeless. VW went to tubeless tires in 1957, but didn't add the safety bead humps until 10 years later. Today, most guys use early Fuchs without tubes, and without any troubles.

Have a look at your wheels and look at the distance from the drop center to the inner and outer rim. Then decide which side will be easier to mount the tires from. Use plenty of bead-butter to lube the tire. If your tire guy is having trouble, flip the rim.
The type of machine doesn't make any difference. If you are using a rim clamp machine, use plastic jaw covers.

I have a set of five Fuchs that I've been keeping around for about 24 years but I'm not sure if should have them repaired and put to good use. The issue at hand is that these rims are rather beat up and have lots of rash and marks on them. I'm not sure if they can be repaired; I'll post pics of them later but in the mean time I don't know what I really have on hand here. I've taken a few pictures of the inside markings in hopes that you guys will help me identify what I have. Also, where can I send them to get the road rash fixed?

looks like a later flat 6 fuchs and part #. These wheels can take a beating and are fairly easy to repair. My deep 6s had a lot of curb rash and they came out killer after they were repaired and chromed.

anywhere i can order quality press in lugs for the fuchs? for the front i am reusing some studs i removed from 944 brakes, they are exactly 30mm after i pressed them in.

for the rear i need 40mm
