ive found this old dude that wrenches on vw's in my area, and he charges 40 bucks an hour for labor. anyone have any idea what it would cost for me to get him to install a freeway flier gear in a bus tranny? i.e. parts cost, approx. amount of time to do the install, etc. |

Old dude that wrenches on VW's = No warranty, gaurantee or even sure if he has the know how to properly re-assemble w/ no leaks. IMHO, messing with your tranny is something I would want done by someone who will do it right. I've had too many experiences with old guys who "wrench on VW's". You're better off doing it yourself or paying the extra for one already done. The experience of doing it yourself will be priceless. If you're not up to it check out Rancho. |

I'd go with him IF you feel he is qualified. NOT based on price or how fancey the showroom looks. In my experiences I've found that some of those "old guys" know what they are doing.
Good Luck! |

so 359 for a 3.88 tranny?
Ok with that, the seals bushings etc all the needed items to install it onto a bus. what would it cost?
parts _____?
how much time/ cost____?
anything else need to be replaced with a bad tran? (I don't have 4th, or well I do if I feel like forcing it).
Didn't mean to hijack but this should be helpful for the post anyways.
Much gratitude

I do not represent Rancho btw. I think you just send them your core. They have always been real helpful, might want to email them. |

If you are looking at just a tranny swap then it'd be "okay". However, if you are looking for someone to build or rebuild a tranny, you're better off with a reputable VW house WITH the proper tooling. Ask any racer and/or restorer out there about trannies and more than likely they will tell you they take their trannies to the pros, even when they built their own motors. Trannies require special tool and jigs to make sure all gears work properly once put together.
Paying top dollar from the get go will save you much more $$$ in the long run.

hey a 3.88 r/p tranny will cost more than a stock geared one... cause they have to do mods in there. probly that guy wouldn't rebuild a tranny anyway.. it's a specialist thing.. so find the price of the tranny from a builder, and ask the guy how much he'd charge to swap it into the bus, and don't forget swapping the axles/RGBoxes over, and you might need new RGB bearings.
If I was to pay someone to work on my bus I'd MUCH rather have someone who knows splitties than someone who is used to wrenching on 70's bugs. |

I've had good luck with Rancho transaxles. I heard they got a bunch of swing axles out of the newer Beetles in Mexico. The ones I got are swing axle built out of a late case with the newer throw-out bearing. I just paid the $50.00 core, I don't think they even want that old junk...the ones that someone made a 12v out of a 6v. |

You can also give Mike a call from Stuff transaxles in Oceanside cali. I paid more than the 359.00 for my .388 .82 4th but I also had him rebuild my reduction boxes. Cant seem to find their number now  . |
