Hey I have a quick question: can somebody explain to me how the air cleaner works in a Type 3? Like, how does 10W40 motor oil "clean" the air? I mean, what does that mean?

fast forward 15 years into the future: k & n filters and amsoil air filters have a "filter oil" that you apply to your air filter after cleaning and the purpose of it is to catch the microscopic dust particles, leaf particles, whatever can basically be airborne and be sucked into your intake.

with these filters you can clean them with warm water and dish soap whenever they get dirty and reapply the oil and keep on trucking.

go back 15 years now:the basic idea of "oil Bath" filters is to pick up dirt and debris and hold in the filter housing, but as we know VW didn't apply your conventional automotive ideas into their design building of vehicles so this was there version as opposed to how it's done today.

hope this made sense.
