| How do I go about lifting the rear of a 74 beetle (IRS). Are theie kits? bus tranny somehow I just dont have a clue. I would also like a little more travel but also stiff enough for the street (adjustable?) Thanks for your help! |

lifting the rear is done by re-indexing the springplates on the torsion bars. Your best bet is to go and buy a how-to book (even a Haynes has info on it), to help you through it. I like to use the tool that is available instead of the chain/jack method that you will see in most books though. without getting technical, you can go right to your limit stops and still not trash the stock CV's (that is if they are in good operating condition), allthough your ass will be sore!
A bus tranny will do nothing for lifting it other than allowing you to use cv's that can take more angle right off the batt.
As far as adjusters go, theres one available for the rear torsion that reqires cutting/welding in. You don't here to much about it (I think its because its alot of work to install) There are also adjustable springplates. Be careful though, you really get what you pay for with them! (Rule of thumb here would be Sway-a-Way or nothing at all) Even with those some people really don't like the idea of having one more "link in the chain" when it comes to offroading. I have a new set here that I have been debating putting on my car for over a year now! Another bit of info on the aftermarket plates is that they are actually wider than stockers so your travel movement will be limited a bit unless you trim them down.
Good luck! |

yea, checkout the thread I started. Pretty much all the answers you'll need to get the rear lifted. Thats what I'm working on now. I just bought a bunch of stuff for the rear. I also have a 74'.
About the bus tranny, the only lift it can help you gain will be from the larger tires you will be able to use. Then you will definetly want to get the rear lifted or the tires will rub against the fenders and maybe even crack them while offroading. :x |
