View original topic: How to make an 002 trans stronger?

Hi all, I am going to install the bus 002 trans in my baja, I have heard that the ring gears in the trans are a weak point. I am looking at installing a powertrax locker in the trans, (if it fits the 002) and would like to install the later 4.86 (i think) gears. The trans I have is a low mile unit somewhere around 60,000 miles. I was wondering if the later model 091 diff and gears would fit? without any major modifications? Also is there anything else I should look at modifying?
Thanks

Unless you have the correct tools to set up these trannies, I'd pass on a ring/pinion swap. It takes a special pinion nut socket, special tool to remove the differential carrier bearings, and a windowed tranny case set up to mock up the gearbox. The ring/pinion you are seeking comes in a '74/75 bus. Commonly called a 5 rib or pyramid case tranny. Find a tranny out of that and you will have your gear. The 3 and 5 rib are commonly called an 002 tranny, the 6 rib is the 91.
Yeah, check out that link given, Eric is pretty sharp on transmision.

An 091 diff will fit into a 002 trans if you also get the bearings and screw-in bearing holders from an 091.
The 4 gears will not fit a 002 trans. They are all wider.
