Hello,

Here you are my contribution for this topic.
It's a type 3 specific front beam tow hook

Check out the Amphi-car in the backround. Now THATs rare...!

riccardo Tue Dec 09, 2008 2:41 pm

sorry it's not an Amphi-car, it's just an older power boat.
the Amphi is much smaller and windscreen is solid with body so it's body color.
I had the pleasure of driving one in and off water years ago.

for the early ones...

I've got one of those.. Still not sure if it's a VW stamped piece or a dealer-sold accessory.

I am pretty sure its an aftermarket wagon acc. If you look at the legs they are all positionable to fit wider and skinnier roof widths. VW would not make, or need to make the fitment adjustable if it were for just a squareback. They are too cheap.

ALLWAGONS Tue Dec 09, 2008 10:31 pm

I have both. Thisis one of the OG VW racks and it is not adjustable.

The other one is on the VW type 4 accessories book, but fits the square also.

I had one of those on my ex-'65. It came from the original owner of a '71. He said it came with the car when bought new. I don't know if that is true but I can't see a reason for an original owner to make that up.

Now THAT's early. Within the first few thousand produced in 1961.

Was he over 60?? They tend to have memory loss.

EverettB Tue Dec 09, 2008 10:53 pm

It was his son that told me but he was there.

Frank, I think you're wrong.
here's a scan from an original dealer accessory book.
it's listed here with the options of wood slats.
can't see the solid one you posted.
that could be an after market?

this manual was a great find, it's just like one of those blue service
books but it's filled with rare parts and accessories.
there's even a fender mirror for type 3 between all
weird options.

I would love to get my hands on that manual for about a week, to scan it.

that offroad looking camper with the visor is badass 8)

riccardo Wed Dec 10, 2008 12:18 pm

if you look close you can see has headrests on ALL seats.
never seen on early bay window buses.
this book is really a find.

I have a Type 3 nose bra for sale in the classifieds section. I would say it is rare because I can not find any pics of Type 3's with one on. They look sweet and save your paint. (or cover that smashed front apron on your lowered car)
