 I am trying to remove the engine from my 79 vert. I have no previous beetle experience. I watched the Bug me Videos and read the Idiots guide. Hovwever, I must really be an idiot becuase I cannot loosen any of the bolts. I put prnetrating oil on them and they still won't budge. Any suggestions or do I need to call a real mechanic to pull it for me? P.S. I didn't realize purchasing a 17mm ratchet wrench was so difficult either. Sears didn't even have one. I had to buy one at Ace. Please help.

Put a pipe over that wrench and add some "beef" to your diet.

The guy that put it together last probably had longer wrenches that allowed him to get some tourque on them nuts.

If you can find yourself a "cheater bar" (something to lenthen that wrench) It should give you more power.

I just pulled an engine from a 74 SB with a 1600DP. The car only had 40,000 miles, but the body was rusted to crap. The engine looks like it was never out and the engine bolts came loose with only a 17mm box wrench. Nothing fancy... just a good tug and the spun.

If yours are that tight... something is wrong.

Hiya jlanzi,

Deathtrap has the right idea here. Use the cheater. You'll find it makes easy doing of a hard job.

However...........be careful with that "ratchet wrench". These tools are great. But they are not made to break seriously tight nuts. Get yourself a regular 17mm box wrench, use the cheater and break that sucker free. THEN use the "wratchet wrench" on the beast.

That will save you the $13.49 you just spent on the new wrench.

:) Thanks to all the replies. I was able to sneek a 3/8 drive socket with a small breaker bar in with a cheater bar over it. It worked. What a relief. Thanks again for all the assistance.
