I finally found a pair of used adjustable lowering struts for my 72.. They don't come with any springs or inserts, so my I'm wondering if I can use the ones off of my stock units?? I would like to eventually get some lowering springs, but I don't see that happening for at least another couple of months.. Will the stockers work until then?

Hey man is money what is holding you back on getting the lowering springs? If so then I think you would still be better off doing it all at once. Perhaps you havn't taken into consideration tht after each time you play with the struts and stuff you have to take the car in to have the front ed aligned, and that runs you about $60 each time. SO once now, then down the road for the lowering springs is $120. I suggest you wait until you have the funds to do it all at once.

that makes sense, but i align it myself using the method on aussibugs website. it works surprisingly well, even if it does take a while to get it dead-on. there's no pulling, nor any sign of uneven tire wear.. i'm still running stock tires right now, so even if it is a little off, there isn't much on the line.
when i get some rims and decent tires, i'll pay the extra $$$ to get it done right.. but in the meantime.... i'm assuming that it IS possible to use the stockers then?
thanx for the insight viggy

The stock strut cartridges will NOT work, but the springs will.

the stock shox will work but won't work as well as shortened shox due to the reduced throw the shox is working over.

i'm picking up these lowering struts now, before anyone else has a chance to snatch them up. and while i hate doing things half-assed, i don't want to see them sit in the garage while i wait to get the lowering springs, so i'll give the stock ones a try in the meantime...
can anyone recommend a good cartidge that won't cost an arm and a leg??
 just for the record, i'm not a tightwad or nething like that but i'm paying most of my tuition out of my pocket so cash can get pretty tight at times..
thanx for all the replies :D

Whats the big hurry to lower it? I agree with Viggy save your cash and do it all at once. If you dont like halfassing then dont halfass it. Do once and do it right. dont rush it. Are you gonna leave the rear end up in the air or lower it as well? I think it looks shitty to just drop the front and not the rear (IMO). Just my 0.02.

like i said, if i don't buy them now, there's a good chance someone else will take them, especially at the price he's selling for. and since i will have them in the meantime UNTIL i get the lowering springs, i'd rather put them on then see them sit in the garage. i dunno, it makes perfect sense to me...
and yes, i'm lowering the rear as well, although i HAVE seen guys get away with just the front dropped, and their cars looked pretty sweet.
there's gotta be a like-minded student (or whoever.. remember cash is tight) in here who could point me in the right direction to some decent cartridges....

what Im saying is YES go ahead and buy them but dont install them until you get everything you need. If your getting a good deal on them, get them. And about the rear end lowering, yea there are some that get away with just droppin' the front but I personally dont like that look. Good luck.

Yo holmes, I'm a fellow college studentas well. And What I suggested is exactlywhat I would do, because in the long run it would save you time and money. BUt hey none of us can tell you what to do. The choice is yours!!! (Captian planet, he's our hero)

Buy them and put them on if you want, it'll be good practice. You can go price the strut inserts at a local auto parts store, just take one of your stock ones to compare. A buddy of mine got some from an Audi that worked for his lowered Super. Either that or get some from Cip1 or Topline... If you're still itching to do it now, then just cut your stock coils, use your stock inserts, and deal with it bottoming out. It will probably motivate you to come up with the funds to get the stuff you really need. Oh and lower the rear too, that doesn't cost anything but time...
