what would be some general guidelines or things to look out for when looking at all original buses as compared to one that has been repaired, repainted, or restored? is a ratty looking all original bus more valuable before or after it is fixed and repainted? is it worth the time to get an og bus and have it fixed over purchasing one that has already had paint and body work done to it?
i will be using whatever bus i get as a daily driver, so time in a body and paint shop may be an issue. thoughts?
in addition to these questions, if anyone has any comments, cuss words, or other random things to keep in mind, they would be much appreciated. thanks! |

Consider this piece of opinion as worthy as a nudie bar pamphlet at street corners on the Vegas Strip. Without nekked ladies even. Here goes.
Assuming you have only 3 months left to drive your dear beloved bus around. What would appease you the most?
Tomorrow is not really guaranteed . With that little mental filter you can screen out a lot of noise and see through straight to your goal. Nothing else matters much, even the resale value, unless a bus is all you have to leave behind, in which case I dunno if you still want to spend it on a bus.
Now let me get back to my lotus position. "Ohm...

Nice Ricky (It's Gilbert from Abq here!)- I had no idea the forums could move beyond Barndoor worship and naked girl wallpaper skins!
Like the man said - do what you will enjoy - your gonna meet your maker a little sooner driving one anyway! :) |

WharfRat,
Pick one already..... I think you've done the right thing, got educated, checked out the market and so on, but it's time to jump in already. From what I've garnered from your posts you want the following,
A Kombi
Original Paint (all one color)
That you can drive from somewhere back to Kentucky.
Stock Height
What else am I missing?
Stick with the Ratty og paint bus. I regret ever painting my bus, there's something about a rusty bus and not having to worry about niks and scratches. |

im trying to go ahead and pick one now, hence the question. i am getting a bit tired of waiting. of course i have an idea of my ideal bus, but my patience is running out. it looks like i am going to have to settle for something less than my ideal. it will still be an effing blast though. |

why? it is ridiculous to settle for less than most all of what you want. shopping for a vintage VW isn't like getting a loaf of bread from the store. you should be willing to wait up to a year, possibly longer. if you need wheels in the meantime, get a $1000 beater car and sell it when you get the bus of your dreams. every person whom I know who has been serious about getting a vintage VW and patient has been able to find the right bus in well under a year. I see many more people blow their load on a mediocre bus because it was local or they were just impatient. tell yourself that it may take a year and have a general goal of six months. I would be really surprised if the right bus for you came up in that time period, but if you already spent your money on the wrong bus then you will get to see someone else buy the right bus. |

it isnt anything i would feel unhappy about. i love a lot of different styles of buses. i am not in a position where i would only be happy with a kombi. i am still not going to just rush out and buy the first piece of shit i run across, i have a list of a few candidate buses, and i am not going to purchase one that i would be unhappy with. for instance, as much as i love and want a kombi, i would certainly rather have a really nice mango/seagull standard, but i dont know enough about buses at this point to get a bus of that trim level and age right. i would love to have a double cab, but a bus is more practical at this point. of course, an all og near mint 15 window would be just peachy, but that is quite out of my reach.
as to your point about getting a beater car for a grand, it makes just as much sense to me to go ahead and get a bus that i like but isnt my "ideal" bus, for i would be able to get my money back out of a bus after driving it for a year, and i would not be able to do the same with a beater car. |

the beater car idea is because any bus you get will be a money pit and if you get a $1000 bus and intend to drive it, it will suck up a couple thousand really quick and then you don't have enough money to buy the right bus when it comes along.
anyway, my point is buy the right bus to begin with. |

i will buy the right bus to begin with, but it might not necessarily be a kombi. that is my main point. |

Lind, I STILL haven't found my Turkis/bluewhite pointy turn signal 15 window, been keeping an eye out since ~'95. seen lots of fried egg Turkis corner window buses, they don't count.
tatty OG paint, or shiny redo... It's really up to you. If it's a really nice OG paint, probaly worth more that redone, if it's really tatty, it's probly worth more de-dented, rust fixed and repainted. A good buffing can bring back a lot of colour though. I'm happy with the tatty OG paint bus. Give it new brakes w/ hoses, window seals, fuel line etc, catch up on the delayed maintenace, work out the kinks, and it's good w/ the 3K mile tune up. ...if you have time... one that's been fixed up costs more.
I might get to some rust repair on my 61 this winter. (gasp) I've been putting it off as I've been hoping to find the turkis version, but I guess I might just settle for SWR. I'm used to it by now. and red bus would be sad if I sold him. |

I'm rockin' the Kombi OG paint, beater style. It's fun, I don't care about ruining anything or letting people in or out. Sure it may look bad, but it's still fun. 8) |

I say its fine to get a repainted bus but just remember. If you leave it like it is maby wax it you wont mind it . but if you plan to take it down and shoot another color. who knows what you could find under that paint layer.
hence to why some people buy a origional paint bus. not alot can hide.
Mainly just pick out a bus somthing you want. Get the details go look at it get pics and sleep on it a couple nights.
buy it or not |

I wish I would've bought one already done.
Mine had really nice original paint but a lot of dings, nicks and scratches.
The guy at the body shop(a few body shops for that matter) told me it would take more time and money trying to worry about preserving the original paint than it would just to repaint the whole thing. |

I didnt know they did a turkis/white bullet deluxe? I thought all turkis & blue white busses came after fried egg turnsignals. |

For April 61 they dropped the front door pockets, and the turkis/BW paint was introduced. Also the sandy tan interior.. they called it basalt, which has the same pattern as the interior of the turkis buses, was used on the SWR/BG and mousegrey/pearlwhite buses. So April 61 through end of 61 production there could, theoretically, have been a turkis deluxe made with the 61 taillights & turn signals. (some sources say the change was March 1st) I'd prefer one made April 11th or earlier, with the pointy dash pod, but I won't insist on that. Maybe I'd even go with a euro 62 or 63. My 61 was made April 11, with pointy dash pod but SWR/BG paint & basalt interior. Isn't there a colour chart online somewhere? |
