It seems like i post a lot on here lately but im just trying to get my ducks in a row now that school is over for 15 weeks and i can spend money on my baja.

From what i hear wheel adapters are not good.. I cant find any non steel painted rims that would look good on a baja. I found a set of american racing wheeks that I would love to have put on? what kind of an offset would i need? i know offset is the distance the bolting surface is from the center but that is all i know. i dont know how much work it is to get the drums redrilled or if i would even want to.

Here is the rims i like: http://www.wheelsforless.com/images/abaja.jpg

Jcwhitney is the only other place i could find a set of 4 lug rims and they were in the same style but i think i would trust american racing beofre some jcwhitney but atleast i would not need adapters

as with most parts of this nature, wheel adapters and spacers are all dependant on quality of parts used and intended vehicle useage. If you plan to jump and hammer your baja, I would not reccomend spacers, however adapter are used far and wide in all type of automotive aftermarket scenes. cool 4-lug baja wheels are a pain to find. switch to a chevy 5-lug or similar, and the options open up.

I personally HATE wheel adaptors! Especially the 4vw to chevy/ford ones. If you ever had to mess with them you'll find out why. The only ones I would ever consider are the 4vw to wide 5vw as they are simply flat plates, still another link in the chain (and more weight) but but a much tougher setup than those crappy weak spacers and weird sized lugs that constantly come loose on the chevy/ford adaptors.

As for redrilling, companies like SoCal imports sell drums in many patterns. As far as qualitly goes I really don't know anyone running any.

Your right, the steel wheel selection for 4 lug does suck. Unless of course you want the wheels to match your utility trailer! You can get Centerlines, Douglas, and Mitchell's to name a few in AL though.

Another thing to consider is to go to Wide 5 by using thing drums in the rear (there are other options if you want stouter brakes back there too) and 66-67' drums up front. Both of these are a direct swap on the 68-up bug (with the correct bearings in the front). This is what I did with my 72' I feel that the wide 5 makes for an excellent offroad wheel because of the wide pattern on the drum and it just looks badass!
