I just got my first bug yesterday and i love it to death 8) 8) , I was amazed that I, 6'4", would be to fit in the car with no problems  . Once my car is started its great, it runs really strong and is fun as heck to drive. My question is that it takes me a few trys to get the motor started. Does everyone have this problem???? For my bug it does not matter if it is cold or hot it takes like anywhere from a 1 minute to 5 mintes to start the bug. The guy who owned the bug before me had the start replaced, and the starter is deffinately turning the engine over, it just seems like the bug does not want to fire up and oh i have a full tank of gas too  . Thanks for your help

Check the basics - spark, fuel, compression. I'm thinking spark. Have you gapped/checked or replaced points, etc? Point gap was my problem. Good luck!

Absolutely check all the ignition things first. Also battery voltage. And adjust your valves, do an oil change, change the air filter, fuel filter, etc. etc., since you just got the bug.

When you've done all that, then, if it has fuel injection, you need to check the FI components. The Bentley manual is great in that it has step by step instructions and all you need is a volt-ohm-meter. Based on what you are saying it could be the cold start valve since when it doesn't work it makes starting from cold very difficult or impossible. But you should go through all the testing steps first to see if the fuel filter, fuel pump and the other electrical components are OK.

Thanks for all the information, I went out this morning and looked at the air filter, man it scared me, it looked like it was about 15 years old, i changed it and wow the bug starts up every time now, its so nice. THanks again
