Who all went?

I for one was not impressed. dont get me wrong this is a great show, and the space we had was great, but It would have been better if it were on a main road. It was kind of hard to find if your not from the area.

I also felt that there were 2 seprate shows!! The watercooled, and then the aircooled. dont get me wrong it is great to have them both at the same place, but I got the feeling that it was like oh ah look at us and our NEW cars, oh ya and over there is what started it all. With that feeling there should be seprate shows.

Also there was a a guy that was a sponsor that was Like "this is a volkswagen olny show, all you with audi and porsche can Park over there. So enjoy the show but you cant particpate."

Also The swap area was real small. In Short I am not impresed, as was woundering what others thought.

I had no problems with it. I got some stuff sold and I had a good time. I thought it was rockin...maybe more swap space though, I needed more parts. 8)

Figured I'd add pictures and some videos that I took because I don't know how to operate my camera. Click the links for a bigger version.

My bus is parked behind the green and white Bay Window, all by it's lonesome. It was a good spot for the bus to take a break under the shade.

Picture I took when I stopped to ask for directions to the park. Both places were closed, so I asked the people doing their laundry in the laundromat. :D

Both of these were me trying to take a picture of the scenery, videos are fine I guess. 8)

I thought it was a good show. A little out of the way, but a good show. A few things I think could have been better are:

1) Group aircooled cars together that are the same. All the buses together, all the Ghias together, and so on. They did this for the water cooled, why not for the air cooled? Seemed really strange and I missed a few people I knew because I did not see their cars parked way on the other side of show.

2) Sorry, but they should keep air and water seperate. Two different types of crowds for those cars.

3) Judging was done by everyone there in a VW. The form stated you had to fill out everything for it to be eligable. That was a mistake as I was judging water cooled cars I had no idea about, and suspect the water cooled people were doing the same with the air cooled. You should have been able to vote for what you wanted and that is it.

4) I agree that there should be an Audi and Porsche class. They are part of the family. There was one Porsche allowed, a '56 bathtub on the air cooled side. Should have let them all in. This issue sparked great controversy over on the vwvortex site.

5) The swap was small, but there were not alot of swap sellers anyway. They all fit there rather nicely, and I think they all did really well since there were so few of them. But I never found any great parts there, although I scored some cool trays for my camper from some guy in a U-Haul. What a strange person he was :)

Overall a good show and unbelievable turnout (over 500 VW's!). Thumbs up to those that put it on, even though I complain about a few things!

Yeah...that guy in the U-Haul sure was weird. He bought my rear seat :?:

Hmmph :!: You guys are complaining :?: :!: :?: :!:

Here in the midwest, with the exception of a couple REALLY big shows (the Michigan Vintage show, and TRS FunFest) we're glad to see 100 cars at a show. Even the Mofoco show barely cracks 100! The average "non-major" show has 40-70 cars! That's air AND water cooled!
And let's not forget, show season just started here. The really nice cars won't even be out till July.

german_metal Tue May 18, 2004 12:21 pm

Just making a few observations I guess....not really complaining. It was a great show. I must say that it was about 50/50 ratio between air and water. So lots of people with lots of different interests. And the food vendors ran out of hot dogs (Not a complaint, just an observation)

marklaken Tue May 18, 2004 12:35 pm

yeah i don't see much to complain about either....i liked the tucked away location, the trees in the camping area...no fires though :(...the turn out was great....even the water cooled folks looked like they enjoyed themselve, and made up close to half the vehicles there....out of the way for denverites is what, about 100 yards :)

i didn't find what i wanted in the swap area and it was small, but i think things like the samba and ebay are replacing swap areas...sellers know what stuff is worth and people shopping are looking for the deal of the century (less than ebay or samba price)....i let a speedo go for $2 and a used 2.0 liter oil cooler sold for $2...that was all i sold!...oh well back on thesamba it goes :)

i was sittin next to that goofy guy in the uhaul :) in the swap area

hopefully there will be a next year and i will be able to drive my currently overheating '67 westy to the event....thanks everyone that worked on the event and i hope it happens again next year.....front range shows are becoming sparse....Mark

It is really about 100 FEET for us Denverites so we complain about everything. Too bad there isn't a show up in FC this year. Have another speedometer you would like to sell? (no, really, I need one!)

Nice to meet you Mark. Don't hang around Mike too much, he is a bad influence :)

marklaken Tue May 18, 2004 12:49 pm

yeah....we don't like having any event that you can ad ___th annual to the end of....we have a campout this weekend though :)...and the poudre should be flowing decent too for those that like to float....

i did think of one improvemnt that could be made though....what ever happened to the bikini models that you see in the hot vw's of the 80's....i've never been to a car show with those...maybe next year :)

no i am out of speedos....it was for an automatic transmission bug (or at least that's what the guy that bought it thought it was too...i really have no idea!)...although i did find a free late 70's bus yesterday...speedo is probably too late for you though!....plus mike is on the case so who knows what will happen to that poor thing :)

curtw_944 Tue May 18, 2004 3:26 pm

All in all it was a good show. I wish the 914s would have stayed!! anyone know if there is a porsche show in colorado? I dont mind if we stay there next year I just feel the parking issues, and class issues need to be addressed first.

And yes for those asking my 2002 jetta was over on the watercooled side but I dont like there attidudes or egos so I hung out on the aircooled side of things. :D

I thought it was a great show. We drove a Buick 7½ hours from Nebraska on Saturday. Some of the guys spent the night in the Cherry Bomb lounge on 6th and Simms. Sunday when we made it there they wouldn't let me enter the Park Avenue as a radical custom.
The swap was a little small in comparison to the hugh turnout of cars but I found some good bargains. I bought a pair of new Ghia pan halves for $130. Found a (new in box) Bosch horn for $8 with the plastic around the spade connectors so the wire boots will stay on. Found a decent pair of taillight lenses with chrome trim and rubbers for my 65 double cab for $10. Older Audiovox AM/FM radio with preset buttons that fits through the hole of a 58-67 radio faceplate and it had 67 only radio knobs on it for $20. Also bought ($50) then resold a bus boys aluminum step with brackets. Found a few other small 1 and 2 dollar items.
I passed on a type 4 in a type 1 flywheel, pressure plate and clutch a guy had for $125 and I couldn't get the mini tach I liked from a young kid for $10.

Recently sold a car to a Denver local. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=73506

You bought those Ghia pan halfs from the guy in the U-haul. You know he slept in that thing the night before? Strange guy he is....... :)

I saw that ratrod yesterday over at Jeff's house. Looks like it is coming together. Nothing but chop tops around there!

emersonbiggins Thu May 20, 2004 6:48 pm

I saw that was a rental pick up but I thought you guys were talking about a enclosed box type rental truck. The guy seemed nice enough for as much as I talked to him. He also had a safari rear window for a bus that looked decent for $150. Did you see his wife?

Yeah, guess I should have said Uhaul Pickup, but whatever! I believe he still has that rear safari too, PM me for his number if you want it. Did I see his wife? Um, yeah, let's leave it at that! :o

emersonbiggins Fri May 21, 2004 8:53 am

I'm glad I didn't buy the safari window now because I know it wouldn't fit in the 65 Double Cab after I got home and looked at the hole shape.

It will be interesting to see my old chop top and Bandimere this year if Jeff gets more work done. He does seem to like chopped cars. That car has been chopped and unfinished for probably 10 years now.

Ian Fri May 21, 2004 3:05 pm

Ghia pans...from a guy in a U-Haul truck...with bus parts? He's weird, but his wife is nice.

PS. I know you're out there.
