| If my 78 vert doesn't have those extra thermostate controlled air louvers under the license plate, then do I have a SEDAN lid on my car? I'm confused about which models they put the extra cooling louvers on. |

No, you didn't get a Sedan lid. From 73 on the Sedan lid is identical to the convertible lid.
Only some (72?) USA Beetles got the thermostat deck lid. That deck lid was intended for Sedans, not converts. |

This topic was covered in a previous thread (Decklid Thermal Vents) in this forum. I was interested so I did a little research and came up with this......
"In 1974 California models received a unique new rear engine lid (133 827 025) which included an M55 themostat controlled flap (133 827 601) added beneath the license plate lamp. When engine compartment temperatures reached a presecribed point the flap would open letting more cool fresh air in. As a result the license tag had to be mounted a little lower this year. The flap's thermostat (133 827 611) was available separately."
An almost direct quote from J.T. Garwood.
Because you do NOT have the 113 827 025 lid does not mean you have a sedan lid. It means only that you have a non-California (sometimes referred to as federal) spec lid. Could be from a convertible or a sedan.
The fresh air louvers on the lid first appeared during the 1970 production year on the SEDAN. Convertibles got their louvers in 1968 (five on each side) and that was increased to two sets of seven (28 total louvers) in 1970

| I'm still trying to figure out how a 74 Super originally sold on Long Island and spent it's entire life on Long Island has one of those deck lids. The lid even has the same original coled... it was not repainted. |

| Easy Glenn, the factory ran out of non-thermostat lids and just substituted the Cali lid to keep the production line going. |
