Alright, check it out. I was going over to get some parts from a guy who was going to part out a ’71 coupe. He had been a little wishy-washy over it, as he thought the car would be better sold as a whole than parting out, but decided he would let me pick it apart. He wanted some parts too, so if I wanted to take the remains he would let me have them at a fair price. I get there, and I think he is right. What I want to know, is what YOU think.

The car does seem to be in too good of shape to go taking it apart. Pans are totally solid and not at all rusted. Paint is obviously way old, maybe original. There is a spot of surface rust on the passenger fender top, and a nasty spot at the front of the driver’s side wheel well. Glass is all there, as is the trim, though one regulator is stripped out. Bumpers are ok, with the exception of one corner bit that is badly rusted on the bottom. Interior is good. Carpets look great, dash is not cracked (I think it is a replacement pad), all the bits are there except one of the air flow control knobs. The seats are good, with one dime sized hole that I found. Rear seat good, but the clip to hold it up is broken. Door panels are done – real saggy pockets. All the electrical items work, except the radio. Mechanically, it runs. Needs some carb work done, which the current owner says is no big deal as he has several of them. Also, the tranny whines a bit. He also has another one that can go with it.

He would like to get $2k out of it. Does that sound at all reasonable?

Ah yes, and pictures

If he's willing to throw in that tranny and a carb for that price, then it sounds like a pretty fair deal to me.

Thanks! Anyone else?

The other option the guy was going to give me is that I take the car, minus the bottom half (rolling pan, motor, and trans), for $500 and part the rest of it out myself.

I think that is too much money for a parts car. I bought a complete parts car with engine and tranny for $300. I used the chasis, engine, and tranny and a lot of misc. parts off the parts car. I sold a lot of left over stuff for over $300 dollars. I feel really bad now that I cut up a solid car.

The parts car I bought was driven daily by a girl until it stopped running. It was parked outside for about three years.

I still have my old rolling chasis with tranny if anyone is interested.

What year is the chassis?

You misunderstand me. He will make it a running car for the $2000. It runs now, just has the noise from the transmission bearings and the carb needs to be tweaked.

Looks too nice to part out. The dash is not original. If he wants to part it out, then no more than $500. If it's a running car, $1500 tops.

Thanks Icy!

No problem. Drop me a line anytime for advice. Once I'm done with Ghias, I'm off to the Type II realm :D

Sorry, but I can spot a cover-up from a mile away. That happens when you've parted out 10 Ghias. Note the lack of speaker holes, plus, it is (very) rare to find an original, uncracked dash.
