View original topic: Is there any way to "rig" my window latch?

My 71 Ghia 'Vert's rear window latch latches, but if I hit a bump, the thing pops open. Most of the time is stays on the little safety latch thing, but it (the window) also falls completely open.
Is there a backyard mechanic way of fixing this? I looked in the Ghia P&R book, but they are $89 and *HTF*. Ouch!!

Also, if I screw the top plate (the plate on the top, not the window) the latch won't close at all, so I have to unscrew them a bit. then the latch is loose, ie. the screws arent tight/flush. Is this normal, or am I missing anything?

On another note, I fixed the driver's visor with a bread tie because my plastic holder broke. So classy!!!

$89 is CHEAP compared to replacing an impossible to find piece of glass. Put a crowbar in your wallet and bite the bullet. Sorry to sound blunt, but if you don't have a car payment, then any money you spend on the car is merely maintenance.

My Cavalier payments are $355/mo. I'd rather pay $89 for a part on an old car that is paid off.

I'm not looking to replace the glass. I want to know if there is a way to get a little more life out of my window latch- THOSE are $89- my glass is in good shape.

I know what you said about the latch. Problem is, one good bump and *CRASH*.

One key thing in making a KG 'vert rear glass latch securely is the relative position of the "catch" part on the glass window vs. the position of the "latch" part attached to the frame bow.
The latch on my '74 is far from new condition and kinda loosey-goosey, but it still stays securely closed and doesn't pop open.
To make the adjustment, you have to go all the way back to the rear glass hinge mounts on the rear bulkhead. The mounting points are elongated to allow the position of the glass to be adjusted in relation to the opening in the top. This will also shift the meeting point of the latch and catch for the rear glass. You may just have to try some trial and error fitting adjustments until secure latching is achieved. It helps to make sure all rubber gaskets and grommets are present and in good shape for all the components that attach to the glass (both hinges & catch).

Until you get the latch/catch adjustment right (or a replacement) I would suggest that you put a pillow under the inside rear window. If that glass window drops open and breaks you're really gonna be sad!

That's an excellent idea! I will do that.
