  View original topic: Was a tach an option on a 71 Ghia?

I have a speedo, a gas gauge, and a tach. The tach is a tiny little thing- the same as the fuel gauge- the bummer is that it doesn't seem to work. I hooked the + to the + coil, but nothing happened. It has a few lines coming out to ground.
Any suggestions on how to read the wires with a multi meter, or how to test the tach?

Not so much a factory option, but it was an available dealer installed accessory. VDO still makes a 2-1/16" tach that'll fit in the clock space.
The (aftermarket) tachs that I've had usually have four wires:
red = 12v power
white = to gauge light circuit
green = to + coil terminal
black = ground

The guys over on the bay window forum are telling me that the wire goes to the negative side of the coil.

That's because they're right and I'm wrong... :?
Haven't wired one in about 5 years or so...
'pologies.
