So what are the absolute necessary maintainence routines that I need to perform regularly to make sure that my ghia is always in tip top shape in regards to the engine and tranny? I read alot about valve adjustments, oil changes, fuel filter, oil breather cleaning, am I missing something else? Thanks for your input people...

| I would also suggest taking your distributor cap off every once in a while and make sure there is no charred build up on the moving parts... which can be knocked a few times before needing replacement. |

You'll get a lot of different opinions on this type of question. What works for some does not work for others. About the only thing everyone will agree with is oil changes.
When I first built my current engine I was fanatical about checking the valve lash. I kept track, and went 11 times where they didn't change. So I stopped checking them so often. I think I've checked them twice in the last year.
I don't use fuel filters. The smallest orifice in my carbs is .5mm, so filtering out super tiny particles is meaningless, anything smaller than .5mm will pass through harmlessly. |

While I agree with you Bruce ( once you know your engine it may not be neccesary to adjust as frequently)
Until one checks their own valves numerous times in a row with no changes I would not be so quick to not recommend the routine 3,000 mile adjustments.
Like you said what works for some does not for others, and determining engine condition by keeping up on the valves is a good indicator of what you have. |

A good suspension is a must, your body will thank you later.
It's not a must, but upgrading to a wider tire size will make you ride
handle better being safer overall.
Do not overlook your braking system,a leaky master cylinder could
cost you your ride...
I'd also think about an ext oil cooler and a larger oil sump. |

| External oil cooler in addition to the stock one? What about adding an oil filter too? Some dude at a VW shop told me that I have to take out the stock oil cooler if I want to put in an aftermarket one. Is that true? Or they don't know what they are talking about ? |
