i have a what i think is a 1955 bug.....i was told that my bug was a 55 because of the doors. below the window where the panel meets the door there is a extra body line. i was told that they only did this in 1955. then i was also told that my bug was a 1954... if anyone can help me find out what year my bug is i would appreciate it very much!

thanks

Is there a sunroof (rag) on this car of yours?

54-55 should have the same doors.

Skim Wed May 26, 2004 5:33 pm

We call them ribbed doors although I have heard all kinds of silly names for them, Continental doors, Condom doors, clunk doors (the sound maybe?) Anyways all bugs up to 55 have them. From oct 52 to 55 have vent wings, before that they are one piece windows and thats a double glove box splitwindow car.

Your car is a 55. I'd say April of 55.

Here ya go. The only one thing is that the contact email addie doesn't seem to work. I've heard that you just send a check and in a few weeks they send you the info, though, it's all good. Hey but for real, is it a ragtop???

The Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen can give you the manufacturing information for your Volkswagen. To get a copy of this "Birth Certificate," send the Museum your VIN number and a request a birth certificate. Since January 1, 2002, with the European conversion to the Euro, the fee is now 15.00 EURO or $15.00 U.S.

E-Mail Contact: EXT1.AUTOMUSE@VWMAIL.DE

Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen accepts check, cash, or credit card. With a credit card send cardholder name, card number, type of card, and the expiration date. With a credit card you will get charged whatever the exchange rate happens to be the day they process it. Contact by e-mail is reportedly the fastest way to obtain a Birth Certificate. Be sure to include all the necesary Credit Card information in the e-mail.

You will receive a nice document from the Siftung AutoMuseum that is suitable for framing with the following info on it.

Customer Name
Vehicle Ident. Nr.
Model
Engine Number
Color
Extras/Options
Date it was built
Date it left the factory
Country of Destination
Date Certificate is issued
Plus any addition info they may have such as wheel rim color, upholstry marerial, M codes, etc.

It will be signed by Dr. Wiersch and Chr. Neefe

Some more info on the birth certificate I found on another site:

EXT1.AUTOMUSE@VWMAIL.DE was a good email where you could send your CC info to the museum. Unfortunately it has been out of commision. I was informed by a fellow VW nut that the new addy is automuseum@wolfsburg.de but I have not tried that.

This is the sure fire way to get your birth cert-. You must go to the museum website @ http://automuseum.volkswagen.de/ and click "kontakte" and fill out their feedback form with your mailing info. Then put your cardholder name, card number, type of card, and the expiration date, along with your name and a short message stating your vehicles VIN number and the fact that you want a cert in the comments box at the bottom of that form.
I recently did it this way and it worked perfectly for my 58 binz.
They charged me $15 US and 90¢ for a copy of the english mcode list and a copy of a list of paint codes in german. (cause I asked for extra info)

Wiggy Thu May 27, 2004 3:09 pm

OK. Here is the EASY way to do this. Fill this out and fax it, including your credit card number. I have done this 3 times and have always recevied my certificate within a month.

I tried figuring out the year of my oval, because the P.O. said it was a 56, and the P.P.O said it was a 57?

I looked into Muir's book and it wasn't exactly clear.

the chassis number is: 1, 173,073

the pan number is: 1,438,727

If the numbers dont match, then they didnt come from the factory together? Any help would be appreciated. THANKS IN ADVANCE!
