Intro: My name is Brent from Everett, Wa. I just got my first VW and want to restore it. The Samba has been very informative so far, and I can't wait to get my new ride on the road (especially with gas prices going through the roof!)
The Car: It's a '71 convertible SB that has a rusty pan, but otherwise seems to be in great shape (runs great, new clutch, brakes, carb, fuel pump and tune.) I know from searching that the floor is fairly easy to replace. My concern is the reinforcing rails that run under the sides of the pan. They are so rusty I can put a finger through in more than a couple of spots. Can I replace these rails or do I need to find another convertible pan? Is there an aftermarket source for these rails?
Thanks for all the help!

Yes, there are several aftemarket sources for the rails...
try www.oeveedub.com.. Richard will fix you up!
and they have good quality pans as well.
the rails are not part of the pans but part of the body.( on the vert) so you do have to remove the body from the chasis to replace them.
use the search.... there are numerous threads on this subject. |

Hiya Seattle,
It's not my intention to rain on your parade, but.................whenever you see rust you can bet there is more hidden away. With you pans and reinforcing rails as you describe, 2 will get you 5 that your heater channels are also shot through with the red stuff.
Since you will have to pull the body (be sure to see a good welder for cross bracing before you do that operation) check the heater channels and the lower body in general. Be sure to pull the fenders and check UNDER the undercoating.

What started out as a 'I'll drive it for a while and restore it later' is quickly turning out to be a 'Let's just tear it all apart and do a full resto, then drive it.' At least it appears to be very sound mechanicly (sp) and I can do the welding myself. I'll keep you guys posted on the progress....
....now to start searching for some go resto books. |
