View original topic: Crooks are trolling thru the classifieds here

I just narrowly missed being involved in an internet car purchasing scam on this site. When I got suspicious of my potential purchasers, I started browsing the site to find a 'contact us' link. I found something more specifically toward what I was looking for. A link on the top left corner of the home page describing the 'classifieds scam'.

I'd like to ask the operators of this site to send an e-mail warning to all new classified ad posters to warn them of these crooks.

Good Luck,
Chris

There is a link on the Home page, a big red link at the top of the main Classifieds home page, and a link that comes up every time you place a new ad or edit your existing ad.

I can't protect people from themselves.

Warren,

I definetly wasn't blaming you guys for the problem, it's just with links all over the place and you're focused on trying to accomplish your task, it's easy to miss these links that you're correctly calling warnings.

I just thought after seeing how extensive the problem obviously is (as you've documented on those links) that a little e-mail warning message could automaticlly go out to new ad posters with a short / simple description and the previously mentioned link.

Me not knowing web hosting and such I thought that that might be a very simple thing to do that would be a nice service to your customers.

Thanks for your consideration, thanks for the opportunity to post a free classified ad, and for a great all-around web-site.

It's a good idea but I regret to say that the same people that don't see or read the warnings on the site either won't read or will skim over the emails too.

This is my opinion, judging by the number of questions I get where the answer to the question was clearly stated in an automated email the author received.

Everett,

Sorry, I don't even know who Warren might be!

You're probably right about the skimming over the e-mail issue too.

Thanks for the feedback, I do appreciate it. Some of the best ideas for the site have come from visitors.
