L J 231 SK1032 779864

I decifer as
May 10th of 61
P23-????
364-???
092- mountain gearing
168- 88 amp/hr battery
181- chrome hubcaps
192- body ready for camper
199- swivel seat for panel?

The bus also has og safari's, 6 pop outs, kmh speedo, dual batteries and 4 tent mounts.
the bus is solid dove blue.
It's in pretty rough shape!

Any help? Lind?????

The date may be 18 05 1. The m-code tag was hard to read, tried to scrape some of the paint off so we could read the numbers. The reason it might be 18 05 1 is because my bus is 16 05 1 (may 16th) and my vin is 778627! The "0" may have been an "8". The rest of the numbers were fairly clear to read though, so they should be fine. It wouldn't make sense to have out of order vin #s ??

Hi VWBrian,
P23 was a designation for SO-23, BUT quite a few of the SO-34s have this on thier Mcode plate. 364 should be a amalmagation of Mcodes for the N. American market like sealed beam headlights and late 1962 red tailights. 199 was for swivel seat, but VW modified it for the flip-seat.
Do you have images of the bus, especially the interior? We are building a flip-seat registery and are helping fellow SO-34 & 35 owners find Westie parts.

I don't have my spec guide handy so when did the larger tail lights appear? Was it before august of '61 or should this bus have small taillights?

I don't have any pictures, it belongs to a guy in Milwaukee.
Crofty, it has '58-'61 tail lights.

That's what I figured. Keep me in mind if you run across any spares.

I've been searching for a 61 flip seat sans interior (ok, I want the flip seat but don't care about any of the camper kit) ever since the wife told me to find a camper. All I would really care about is a reasonably solid body.

Is this bus potentially for sale? I've had a wtb ad here on thesamba for a couple of months now.

Let me know please!!

Hey Sean,
You can have the camper parts... I just want the bus. Are you in need of the flip seat mechanism?

IIRC the bus was a factory safari bus also. For some reason I also remember it as a euro spec bus too? I don't think it had holes in the bumpers for overriders, but I'm not positive. I just don't get the VIN. If it was made may 10th, then why is the vin 1,237 buses *after* mine when mine was made may 16th of 61? If it was made the 18th (which is possible, the "0" may have been an "8") it would make a little more sense, but did VW pump out 600 buses a day?

DaveM Thu Oct 07, 2004 7:19 am

with 168600 busses produced in '61, even if they worked 365 days that year, that would still mean 462 busses per day.

This flip seat sounds interesting to me since it's possibly a euro spec bus which would match three others of mine... so what's up with it?????

I believe that the factory was cheating and skipping chassis number in 1961. my flipseat is 3000 buses later than Merz's SO-23, yet they were built on the same day.

The guy plans to restore it this winter, It's pretty rough! Lots of rust, interior is all busted up.
