I have nothing at the moment. My air cleaner which is on the right hand side should have a pre-heat pipe through the lower tin to some sort of scoop. BUT my tinware which is possibly non original has the hole for the pre-heat in the lower tin on the left hand side. Does the pipe go across the crank pulley to be retained by some sort of clip?
The only 66 engine pic shows the pre-heat going behind the engne somewhere. I don't have the scoop either so if anyone knows wehre one is that would be great too.
Thanks,

This is a tough one. There's a few posts on this topic already, but my 67 sounds similar to your 66. The owner's manual clearly shows the 1" pre-heat hole running down to the right rear tin, just inboard of the shroud-to-heat exchanger (large) hose. The only stock tin I was able to locate used had two pre-heat hoses for the beetle style air cleaner that had two snouts...I ended up plugging the left-side one. In hindsight, I should have ordered a replacement tin with no small holes and drilled a 1.25" hole on the right side...there's nothing fancy about the stock holes. Wolfsburg West sells the grommets, hose, and clips.
The part I still haven't figured out is what happens under the engine. What I was told in this forum was that the hose somehow makes its way up to a nipple on the right-hand heat exchanger. I believe this is true for some models; I even have an old heat exchanger with the nipple up by the flap mechanism. What I don't get is how it would get there from below. The nipple location makes sense for a pre-heat hose that goes through the front tin, but I don't see a way to route it forward from the rear tin. I picked up a weird little pre-heat pipe here in the classifieds, hoping it would all come together, but no joy.
For now, I ran the pre-heat hose into the area by the right-hand pushrod tubes, figuring it was good enough to look right from above, and that I'll keep looking at shows until I find somebody with the correct set-up. If you get there before I do, post what you find. I'll post a photo of my tin, the heat exchanger with the nipple, and the pre-heat tube I found. |
