I had a 1914 built for my notchback about a year ago, drove the car with it in for about 3 weeks, then sold my notchback but kept the motor.
I found a 65 crewcab litterally in a bush by my house and am almost ready to put the motor in.
The ass end is already slammed with sprintstars. The front is soon to follow. :)
Here is the problem. The carbs I have (that were on the notch) are Dellorto DLRA 36s. They came off a running 1641 about 2 years ago. Tuning dual barrel duals in a notchback is a bitch to begin with because of lack of room, but even with the help of what I would consider "very well versed individuals" help, I could never get the motor to run smooth and purring. Jets weren't readily available at the time. So... Will 36 DLRA Dells be adequate on the following motor. Just like everyone else, I would love some IDAs, but I just can't seem to get the money together for them, Here is the specs of the motor to the best of my memory. I could call the builder to double check with him, but it is 4 in the morning and I don't think would appreciate a call right now (Darren Krewenchuck) I have never rejetted carbs. Everywhere I look to see what size jets people use with a motor like mine, they are NEVER using these size carbs. My options are to A: rejet the carbs to an undetermined size. B. Take the motor to someone and have it done for me (which I can't afford). C.Sell the carbs and save for IDAs (which means I can't drive it so this is not acceptable)
Has ANYONE run a 1914 with DLRA 36s? If so PLEASE tell me which jets you used.....
New case
forged 94s (mahles I think)
counterweighted 69mm crank
engle 120 cam
compression a littler higher than stock 8.5 I am pretty sure
42 x 37 full port and polish heads
12lbs flywheel
stock rods
I can't remember lifters and I know it makes my question hard to answer
stock oil pump I think
No external oil cooler because it was in a notchback
bosch 009, mechanical points etc.
kenny 1700# cluth with Kuchloc disc
I still need to pick up an upright oil cooler for the type 1 tinning as
well as a new exhast as my old type 3 merged headers went to a buddy.
any suggestions would be a great help. Finances are playing a major role for me so please keep that in mind. Thanx. Ted |

| So you are saying that these carbs will be adequate for my 1914 when tuned properly? Any ideas on what size jets would be needed ? I havn't pulled out the jets that are currently in the carbs in a while, but they are definately sized for a 1600cc. |

I took on the carbs apart this morning. I used digital callipers and measure the inside of the venturi and it is 30mm.
choke (venturi) 30mm
Main jet 122
emulsion tube 9164.2
air corrector 180
idle jet 60
pump jet; 45
So what is too large or too small. I thought maybe the problem was that because the venturi is so small, the speed of the air flow could be "icing" up the carbs.. but like I said I don't know anything about carbs. (I had too look at a diagram to be sure which jet was which) |

Thanks! I think about it almost every day. I owned it for 8 years. I started a body off resto in Jun of 96 and didn't drive it again until last august. I can honestly say it was one of the happiest days of my life the day I ripped through the gears around my block with no insurance on it at about 2 in the morning waking up all my neighbours who had been watching me over the years with funny looks on their faces. :)
I took it to a show, and someone led me to believe that they "just had to have it" as their daily driver so I sold it to them really cheap, then the next time I talked to them (a couple months later) they had already flipped it for a beetle. Early notches are very expensive to maintain if you want to run 5 lug brakes and keep pushbutton dash's. The mortgage comes first and I needed something that could carry my kids and the dog, so I went on the hunt for a crew cab. |

| Those carbs will work fine, especially in a heavy T2. The jets you listed are the ones CB supplied in them when they were new. They should be very close. |

| Thanks Bruce. Havn't seen ya in a while. I just order some 135 mains, pump jets #50 (if the guy has any in stock still) and he is also going to let me know if he also has any 32mm chokes/venturies left. The idle I am going to leave at a #60. This should be a good start. Any other suggestions? When I read your name in your post, I just remembered that Geoff Peterson said that you were their "carb guy" |

I'll add a little bit to this for you. You have the correct jetting for the venturies and really don't need to change anything. This will work on a 1641 cc , and the 1914 cc. If you can obtain the delloto carb book it would really help you. The carbs (36 mm) are a little small for the 1914 but will work great when dialed in. The 30 vent. will give you better mileage with the 122 mains. You don't need the larger mains with the 30 vent. Use the standard formula for jetting the carbs. 4 times the size of the venturies = the main jet size. 4 x 30 = 120. Use the 180 air and you may have to go to a little larger idle jet. These are really simple carbs to work on and perform better than webbers. I run dels on all my engines. 2610 cc pauter big block. 2275 cc, 2176 cc, 1914 cc, 1776 cc, 1641 cc.
Let me know if you need any more info.

| Thank you very much. When I had the motor in my notchback, I had just a few days to get it running before a car show, so I was in a big rush. This year I have left myself a lot more time to actually learn how to do it myself properly. I Will definately pick up that book. I know which one you are talking about. Thanks again everyone. Ted. |
