View original topic: When I turn my bus off......

When I turn my bus of it backfires about 5 seconds after the switch is off and a 3 to 4 in. flame spits from the exhaust. The engine is a bone stock 1600 DP and it is in a 1971 bus. I ran a compression test and everything checked out good. There is also smoke coming out of the breather hose that is attached on the oil filler and the engine begins to run hot very fast! I have checked the valves, timing, compression, vac. lines, carb, and everything else I could think of. Is it possible that I just have bad bearings? Thanks for any ideas/help

also I forgot to add the heads are pretty new with only 5000 miles on them.

Could be you have large deposits of carbon in your combustion chambers that get red hot quickly and causing preignition and the run-on you describe.

With the new heads on the engine is that possible?

Is you carb solenoid hooked up right and working? Are you running a stock fuel pump or is there an electric one in there? Do your plugs show a rich running condition? All back and sooty in the tail pipe? When you did all of this work, did you clean out the heat riser?

Please define timing, compression, vacuum lines all good.

Just looking for a clue.

I don't like bad bearings for this one.

Could be if you've been running a rich mixture all this time.

Thanks for the help everyone I'm going to pull the motor and see if I can't see the problem when I remove the heads. If that does not turn out to be the problem i'll let you guys know.
