The stamping is AE 154308. What can I learn from this. I'll give you a hint. I was told it was rebuilt to about 1835cc's (does that sound right?) and right not it is in a '65 Type II (is that where it started out?)

Thanks for all who chime in.

That number you gave me seems it comes from a 1600 50 hp from around Aug. 1972. If it was rebuilt from the block to a 1835, the block must have not been changed.

The AE means it was originally a 1600 that was used in a Type 1 from 8/70-7/71 (according to the Aircooled VW Engine Interchange Manual). So, no it isn't original to your type 2.

I think you AE engine code started out life in 1971-1972 as a Type 1 1600 dual port.

During one of it's rebuilds, it got upped to an 1835 with bigger pistons and cylinders.

Now that you have your metric wrenches from Sears, go over to bus depot or cip1 or somebody like that and order yourself up a 17 mm allen wrench for checking the transaxle level.

Might start reading up in your Muir book or your Bentely about pushrod tube seals.

Ideally the way to fix your hot start problem is to change out the starter bushing. If that doesn't work you can order a "hot start relay". I would doubt you would have a 6V starter.

You are righ. It's all 12v. Perhaps the only remnant might be the flasher, as it runs at about 120 flashes per minute.

The flasher is very voltage dependant. They also tend to wack out when one of the bulbs is out, but you probably don't have side marker lights on this thing. They do require perfect grounds.

Sometimes people do put the wrong turn signal bulbs in these things however which draw more jouice than they are set up for. That will cause them to wack out also.

In olden days we used to check the transaxle fluid with a 17 mm bolt and a coule of nuts threaded on there as per Muir. Even though that was cheap and we were broke, buy the hex key. I bought a set of them that fit on my ratchet. Wicked handy.

Have a good look at the reduction gear boxes if you are changing out the transaxle fluid.

AE= August '71 to July'73

Rather than start a new thread, I thought I'd throw my question on this thread.

My engine starts with an AH, which I think means it was built in '73 (also not original for my '71 bus), but what does the number of numerals after the two letters tell you? In the tables in Muir's book, it looks like all the engines should have 7 numerals (usually starting with 0 or 5, if I'm understanding correctly), but mine only has 6.

Does this mean anything?
