View original topic: Front disc brake help desperately needed

I've replaced my front disc pads, but now they are dragging. What makes them go back into the non bakeing postion when the brake is realsed. I think I may have the "spring clip" on wrong...or it's wore out. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I'm tring to prepare it for a vaction cruise in a few days.

I thought the disc brakes were self adjusting, and you just had to back up or something.

There's not really a "spring return" on disc brakes like there is on a drum. WHen your foot eases off the pedal, the hydraulic pressure is relaxed, and the pads back off far enough to not squeeze the the disc so tightly. You can see this on a caliper if you have it off the car...you sometimes have to compress the piston with a c-clamp to get it on the disc because there are no return springs.

Maybe you have binding inside the brake piston/cylinder. If water gets in the brake fluid, it can migrate to the brake cylinders and pit them out so the piston binds up.

Self-adjusting rear drums exist, but not on any VW I've ever owned. They have a fancy ratchet mechanism that engages the adjusting star when the car is braked in reverse.
