| So I have a fresh 1904 engine. and I was taking of the rocker arms to torque down the heads after about 100 miles of driving. the #1 and 2 side came of after some brute force and went back on allright, but the #3 and 4 side I had no luck with. I grabbed two prybars and When i was prying the block (that go around the rocker and the head stud runs through) snapped! On closer inspection I discovered that the studs had mushroomed out a little around the base of the blocks (maybe the rocker was loose?) so I replaced the stud and the rocker blocks and i noticed when i was putting the stud in that i could still count out about two or three studs, but it didn't seem like it wanted to go in much further so I left it. I got every thing back on but I could barely fit my fingernail between where the block connects with the head. Any who I drivie it for a while and I hear a noise that's off, so i check the valves and they are wayyyyy loose, so i re adjust and I'm going to go check again tomarrow morning. Input any one? |

What kind of rocker shafts/assembly are you using? I believe the holes in the stock rocker shaft are slightly tapered and will only go on properly in one direction, else it binds leaving a slight gap at the bottom. If you torque it on with the wrong end out, they will be a royal bitch to get off and will cut into the base of the stud.
Don't know if that's the case with yours, but just in case it is... :!: |

Some heads use the "O" ring under the stand (they will have a champher) and some don't. Make sure if the "O" rings are needed. Vic.

| The heads that I'm running are 044 mags. I remember putting an o' ring aroud the stud before putting the rocker on over it, that was the way that it was before. I believe that the rockers that I have are solid rockers. I'm drinking my morning cup o tea and then I'll go out and survey the situation. |

| Chances are the O-ring wouldn't prevent it from seating all the way. With 18 Ft. Lbs. torque, the O-rings would more than likely just split, squish, explode or just get out of the way. Certainly wouldn't cause any steel to mushroom. I would think you don't have something installed properly (ref earlier post) . Can you post a pic of the problem? |

| okay dokay so I took a look and the valves on the #4 side were way off, and that's the one I have the most problems on. SO I took off the rockers and then I took out the stud and I compared it to the old one I had that went bad.... so take a look the one on the left is the one I should use, the one on the right is the one that I replaced it with http://thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=77417 so obviousally I need to find one the same size to replace that one on the left huh? Hey Keifernet if your viewing this where did you get those kind of studs and hwo does it make a differnce? okay doky hopefully I'll get this solved tomarrow. |

I think ( by the pics and if I read your post right) the one on the right was what you tryed to replace it with?.. and the one on the left was the original?.... you need the shorter original one...
and if you used vice grips to take them out and "marred them up" like that then that is no good... try "double nutting" them in and out or get a stud removal tool. The marks left by the vice grips will mess with the rocker shaft fitting on the stud.
since the heads were new CB 044's maybe get some studs from them? |
