I am tall. In order to reach the shifter on my 71, I bent the previously straight shifter. Now it is difficult to shift because it swivels around. I noticed that the earlier year shift rods were made with a bend in them. Do they swivel? Will an earlier year shifter fit my 71?

| The earlier shifters had a pin sticking out of the fulcrun pivot ball that prevented the lever from rotating by engaging a slot in the pivot ball seat at the end of the shift rod. Why VW stopped doing it I don't know... I thought it was a good idea. |

So--can I use the pin-type shifter with my late-model socket? Any ideas?
