| my exhaust is shooting oil like crazy. its not just burning oil, it actually shoots it out the exhaust. i am pretty sure its the rings but i want to make sure before i go and take my engine out again. im pretty sure i didnt do anything wrong putting it together when i had it out last time because i just had it down to a longblock and not fully apart so no human error i can think of would cause that. i didnt really notice the problem before, maybe because i had the stock exhaust and i just changed it so it doesnt collect in the muffler or something but its way bad. also the engine had been sitting for awhile and i just put it back in if that might have anything to do with it i dont know. it seems like i would have no compression or just burn oil like crazy but it just shoots it right on out. is it the rings or something else? |

To get a better idea of whether it is the top end or the bottom end, do a wet compression test
1. Pull plugs and check compression
2. Put a couple of squirts of motor oil in the spark plug hole and recheck. If the compression raises considerably, you know it is in the rings. If not much changes, suspect the valves. |

| If some one put rings up-side down it will pump oil See -> http://www.1800vw.bizhosting.com/leakdown.htm |

| wow thanks that helped a lot. I did the wet compression test and it did just what you said, compression went up considerably with oil. im just going to get a piston/cylinder kit. is there anything else i should look for while its apart on the heads/valves etc. i want to do this well but this is my first car and first time tearing the engine down, so i lack experience. any help would be great. thanks |

If it is shooting oil like that and you are going to tear it down I would check the valve guides while you have it apart. If they are highly worn the engine will also shoot oil out of the exhaust. Depending on how many miles are on the heads it would also be a good idea to replace valves and springs, but in all honesty by that point it just becomes cheaper to replace the heads with new ones and start fresh.
