I need to separate the breather box from the support base, which means I will need to remove the Gland Nut. But there is a sleeve inside the Gland Nut - How do I get the sleeve out? It is smooth, and while it does have a lip, I am having trouble prying it out. It is shown in the Haynes manual, but not in the Bentley manual. I need to use the base with my new breather box on my new engine. Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Maybe spray a small amount of rust breaker around it? Try not to get any into the engine.

Thanks. The engine I am removing the breather box/support from is going to be retired. I will be using the support on my new engine along with a breather box from CB Performance.

I will apply some WD-40, and I will also pick up another "Internal Pipe Wrench" sized for the sleeve. I have one for the Gland Nut from EMPI, but it is too big for the sleeve. I did not know that it was just a glorified pipe wrench.

Thanks again.

Make sure when you install the breather box to the VW stand you put a bit of teflon tape on the threads to help lock it down. The dang thing likes to loosen up and can leak oil.

Also use some t-tape on the brass fitting that go into the breather box itself, and try to stagger the brass in-lets....do have them but into each other.
The beather is ok , but still may leak a bit of oil.

The best way to remove that internal nut is to use an "internal pipe wrench". To see what I'm talking about -- and to show the counter monkey at your hardware/automotive store -- goto http://www.mcmaster.com/asp/enter.asp?pagenum=2586 and scroll down. You want style B. The wrench is a shaft with a cam on it, kind of like an axle with a cam instead of a wheel. When you rotate the shaft the cam bites into the nut. A simple wrench or plyers is all that's needed to grip the shaft. I bought mine at Napa and it came in a set of four sizes.

Success! I got a set of the internal pipe wrenches at Home Depot for about $12. The 3/4" did the trick. Thanks all for the info.

Now, what is the purpose of the sleeve?
