I have a stock 1600 SP in my 62 bug. It is a daily driver. What are the pros and cons to giving my heads a good port and polish? I don't know the stock size of a 1600 SP head. What should I increase the port size to? I do not run heater boxes, I have a merged 1 3/8 header, I think???

imo i would say don't do it. the cost that would go in to porting and polishing would not really show on your single port motor. you could actually lose hp from doing so. and also to do it right you would need a flow bench so you could have all cyl flowing the same and i think that would be hard on a single port motor. if this was a direct ported fuel injection motor porting and polishing would work great. i'll stop here and end it with just say in the long run it all comes down to that if you p&p your heads you would lose air flow and fuel won't atomize correctly now you have fuel that wont burn and you lose hp.

if i'm wrong some one correct me. but from what i've learned it a lose lose situation on a stock motor

I have to disagree and agree. If done improperlly it will cost power. If done correctlly it wil add power. The 1500 bug actually had a fair amount of hp when considering the 1600 dp motors figures.

Errrr... isn't that exhaust a little bit of over kill on a 1600sp. I mean from what I know that could actually lead to a burnt exhaust valve

Over kill? You think so? Isn't stock exhausts(like those crappy extractors), aren't they like 1 3/8? It was installed by my friend and he really knows his sh t about acvw's so I trust my engine will be alright.

People also said that I would struggle if my tranny had a 4.12 r&p and a .82 4th gear with a stock 1600. But it is great, no complaints here.

If you do not enlarge the ports in your heads, just set your sights on removing obstructions in the airways, you will likely be fine. Add to that a good valve job, and I think you will end up with a pretty happy motor.

Check out the head porting article on Cal-Look.com for a better idea of what goes on in there.
