View original topic: replace rear wheel bearings?

Someone told me that rear wheel bearings on beetles "never need to be replaced" Is that an overstatement? Why would they be so immune from wear? (I didn't get to ask him, so I thought I'd ask you guys.)

That's totally false. They need to be replaced when they fail.

However, with regular gear oil changes (swing axle), and cleaning/repacking (IRS), its very possible to never have a bearing fail.

That's crazy! If you're in there they should at least be checked. I took off my drums and pulled the chamfered spacer out and could see that they were water contaminated. Glad I caught it. After I got inside I could see that both of the bearings were rusty and rollers and bearings were pitted. Yucky!

If the Beetle is lowered, chances are the bearing can easily fail. This is because many people lower the rear end so much they get a negative camber effect.
The bearing get their lubrication from the gear box. The gearbox oil travels down the axle tubes via gravity and unto the bearings. Well, with too much negative camber, the oil can't make it's way to the bearings at all.

The rear wheel bearings on beetles ALMOST "never need replacing".

But if you lower the car, or let it sit for extended periods, or let the transmission run dry, these things can lead to bearing problems.

These bearings are pretty good size for the job the do and they have almost constant lubrication if everything is stock and as it should be.
