The definition of this word acording to the online Encarta dictionary is:

1. too preoccupied with detail: petty or too preoccupied with details

2. irritating: irritating, painful, or worrying, especially in a small but persistent way

I was totally dismayed to discover my proper use of this word, upon posting to the forum, had been magically replaced with a PC term for what someone determined falsely was a term derogatory of an ethnic group.

Please choose a synonym.

I did. Petty worked. That word raised a ruckus over this same issue in the Portland area when it was used in a newspaper. It's crime is a similar sound to the derogatory term, so people make the assumption they are related.

I just wanted to point it out. Caught me off guard to see my post come up edited. I can live with a synonym. Thanks.

That word is not actually banned, it's just that it matches a pattern of words to ban that is set up on the site.

Everett-- how about posting the official list of banned words sometime?

EverettB Sun Jun 27, 2004 9:36 am

There are very few words, mostly only racist terms. The word he mentioned starts with "nig" so you can see why it might be banned.

The word he used is not racist though.

kayak , just testing to see if it's still a banned pattern

LOL, at myself.

Now that I must use a synonym, I find that word so suddenly and frequently appropriate.

Human nature I guess. "Don't push this button." That's why I've never believed in censorship. With paranoia and conspiracy theorists, censorship validates and feeds the paranoia and conspiracy.

I'm sensitive to the public nature of this forum, though, and don't envy Everett's task, which I've noticed he does with grace and patience. I'm not advocating for change, just commenting. I suppose it could be a topic for the rants, but frankly, I'm not that ambitious, and it is a moot (yet another occasion I could have used that word) point and to belabor it would be obsessing.

The pattern flagging program must kind of be like a grammar checker I'm guessing, but simpler.

We can't say W affle H ouse, and you're upset abut niqqardly? The ways of TheSamba are strange sometimes.

Can't say W affle H ouse? Weird. That would seem pretty benign. There must be interesting stories.

And I'm not upset. ***gardly was the word of the Portland debate, actually, not the one I found transposed, but guilty of the same sin for the same reason.

Dude, that is freakin' hilarious.

But seriously, if "Wa**le Ho*se" is banned, can "Donna's Camaro" be far behind?

Germanpride Mon Jul 12, 2004 7:59 am
