I have been able to finance my vw obsession from buying and selling dead peoples stuff. I seem to find much better merchandise at estate sales.

most definitely! I scored an old rotary phone, brand new in the box at the Estate Sale of a phone worker. Tools are also a great score at Estate Sales because the uppity furniture and antique buyers often don't look twice at that stuff, and most people don't know what they are looking at.

I never knew you were a VW guy! Looks like you are still collecting "Mud"! I haven't collected in years, but I have all my old glass still. Good to see a familiar face on here! :D

yup I remember you ...
I have been a vw head since the mid 80's ...got my first 21 window in 1989 and never looked back ... another guy, Glen McAdam who is on the samba once in a wile owns it now... He is also an insulator collector, a Dead head and a VW crazy like me...
VW busses are the best vehicles ever invented for insulator hunting trips!!!
I know at least one other guy (Bill Ostrander) who has a 66 Rivera camper . and the now defrocked Ron Suza use to do all of his telegraph glass hunts in Nevada out of a mid 60's double cab...

My next door neighbor buys and sells coca-cola memorabilia... he does this for a living, drives across country, constantly looking on ebay... wild how he can support a family on old coke stuff... people love it I guess...

Oh yeah!
You can always find the stuff that they would never put in a garage sale...

I worked at an antique and estate auction in Florida for 3 years, I loved it. I learned all kinds of stuff that I have since forgotten and saw some amazing items.

My best auction find was middle and rear seats from a 64 bus in NOS condition for $2

I've been helping clean out an old goverment surplus wharehouse that a guy bought back in the day from the goverment. He died and his son(63yrs old) is/was the owner of it, but taxes have forced him to sell it, so I was contacted to get all the VW stuff he had collected over the years out and sell. let me tell you, he has alllllllllllll kindsa stuff in there aswell as a bunch of surplus stuff. I was climbing over a big wood thing coverd by a blanket to get to some stuff & he told me to be gentle with it, so I asked what it was & here it's an old record player that makes records! There is an old wooden drawing desk that still has it handbook in plastic in the top drawer, I'd have to say it's from the 50's-60's, there's furniture buried under stuff & the craziest thing he told me to becareful around was an old wooden chest that is all beat to hell missing about 1/3 of the wood, he tells me it's from the 1800's. I found a bunch of old glass pieces that make something up, wood stools covered with carved leather, it's crazy. The first day I was there I saw an old telephone, it's a desk top phone & I asked him about it & he told me it was from a military office. I asked what he was gonna do with it cause I thought it was cool & he said take it if you like it, so I brought it home, cleaned it up & put it on my end table thinking how cool it would be to use, so I checked it all out the other day, hooked it up & the damn thing works/sounds great, better than any phone I've talked on since the 70's. Last night I did alittle research and found the phone was made by Automatic Electric & produced from the late 30's to the mid 50,s. I think the model is A40 or something like that, but all the images I found that look like it are all missing a lever on the one side that locks the reciever(piece you hold to your head to listen & talk) to the body. Both the wires are straight & covered in material, pretty cool phone, but I forgot how long it takes to dial a # with a rotary dial

When I can find a 25 cent Firestone Tire ashtray at a garage sale and resell it for $27.00 you know I'm hooked!

Here is one of my recent finds, a French WW 1 helmet. This was made for trench warfare. It's quite a piece of history. I am keeping my eyes peeled for more.

The last 2 weekends I did really well$$$..I picked up a 1961 HH Scott tube amp/AM/FM reciever with a turntable for $5! 2 weekends ago..And this past weekend a boxfull of late 50's-early60's Barbies in excellent condition w/outfits for $20!!Ive gotten some really good stuff in the past few years, its always fun..My wife and I love going. Its amazing,Ive found that where I live theres alot of people who go to the sales but apparently not looking for the stuff I am 8) Ive shown up at a yard sale at 11-12o'clock and said"Theres probably nothing good left".The last time that happened,I left the yard sale with a NICE 70's Corgi Batmobile and Batboat/trailer for $1!!!!It brought back memories, but unfortunately a few months later it paid for the electric bill
